John’s Story

Site created on October 28, 2018

On October 20, 2018, John Elkins woke up with symptoms of a stroke. An MRI the next day revealed that he had indeed suffered two strokes; one in the pons, and one in the cerebellum, leaving him with no movement in his right arm or leg, double vision, slurred speech, and other aftereffects. Since then, he has regained movement in his right limbs, his vision has improved, his speech and facial paralysis are almost completely back to normal, and he has been officially cleared to drive. He went to the Shepherd Center inpatient rehabilitation facility in Atlanta, and then completed his first round of outpatient with Shepherd in April. He is a beloved father, friend, and family member— I know we're all rooting for and praying for him!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Madison Elkins

Dad’s creatinine broke into the 2’s last week! His latest reading was 2.97, down from the mid 4’s—so a big improvement. It continues to trend downward (which means improving kidney function) so we hope and pray that continues! His nephrologist is encouraged it’s getting better.

He’s also been seeing a lot of gains in therapy, particularly with his right arm. His shoulder pain is almost gone, so he’s been able to work on strengthening and range of motion. He also got a music glove (like guitar hero; but you press the tips of different fingers to your thumb—google it, it’s awesome!) that has improved his hand dexterity significantly in less than 3 weeks!! He tried handwriting today for the first time in a few months and it was amazing. We’re definitely thankful and encouraged to see these improvements!
