Journal

Yesterday afternoon Joe returned home 10 days before original doctors order. He was very homesick missing home cooking and family. His physical and occupational therapist said he had to meet specific goals prior to being released so Joe told him he would meet those goals by Friday July 31 and no one believed he would. However his tenacious spirt proved them wrong and he was able to transfer from bed to wheelchair to commode and back somewhat unassisted.
Our house wasn’t ready for Joe and his new ADA requirements. We did receive a ramp to the front door and hospital bed on Friday and hours prior to Joe arriving Joes twin brother Jay and friend Jim Gomolla worked tirelessly to adapt our tiny first floor bathroom to have wheelchair access.
Today we had family over for a BBQ. Jay made great burgers and Joe’s granddaughter entertained us with several songs.
Joe still has a very long road to recovery but hopefully he will be more comfortable at home. Currently he spends 22 hours a day in the bed and two one hour shifts in a wheelchair. He will not be able to attempt to move to a walker for at least 5 more weeks.
