Joe’s Story

Site created on July 3, 2023

Some of you know Joe’s story but others do not. It’s too much to write here but this site will keep you all updated on the most recent events.

I’ll give the bones to part of his journey: On November 20, 2009, Joe was involved in a head on collision with an 18-wheeler. It was a struggle but he survived. He had a long road to recovery and a new normal. The car accident impacted his left side (non-dominant) greatly. He also broke his back and neck. Basically he was a functioning quadriplegic according to his doctors.

On Friday June 30, 2023, Joe had a massive brain bleed and a stroke. The brain bleed and stroke happened in the left side of his brain which would effect his right side of the body and his speech pathways. At this time, we did not know how much of an impact.

In the hospital, more things happened that were not in his favor of full recovery. Due to his brain bleed, he could no longer be on blood thinners. Since the car accident, he has needed them to help battle the ongoing blood clots. In order to potentially take care of the clots, a procedure was deemed necessary. However, we learned that in order to have this procedure, Joe would need to have a tracheotomy instead of the ventilator. We know that Joe would not want the tracheotomy because of his previous journey recovering from the car accident.

We were then forced to make our hardest decision so far in our lives. This brings us to where we are today. We are promised by hospice that he will be given the care he needs to transition comfortably, peacefully, and with dignity. We are treasuring these last days. Again we appreciate your prayers, support and understanding at this time.
