Journal entry by Molly Doerrer

Our family would like to take this opportunity to bring closure to this part of Joe’s story. While we are learning that the process is far from over, we are realizing each day how lucky we are and impressed by Joe’s health. We express our profound appreciation for the many, many people who have supported us along the way.

Joe has made a huge amount of progress since returning home. His balance and endurance increase every day. He is realistic in thinking it will take many weeks, possibly months, for the feeling, flexibility, and strength of the left foot and leg to fully return. In the meantime, he tries to be as independent and mobile as possible and doesn’t sit around waiting for us to do things for him. We are waiting for the PT schedule and look forward to attacking rehab.

Every person reading this has helped in some small or big way. We have had help with grocery shopping, house cleaning, dog walking, lawn mowing, and cooking. We have enjoyed cards and flowers. Joe has fast food gift cards to enjoy with friends for weeks to come. Our colleagues have covered meetings and sermons and funerals. People brought meals to the hospital and others sat and prayed with us. Sonja Super graciously set up Meal Train for us. And we have enjoyed some great food! We have a few more weeks where people have signed up for a meal. Thank you so much for your help. We will remove all dates beyond the end of July.

We have learned so much about neuroscience but even more about the collective power of prayer and faith and friendship and family. Life is moving forward!

Forever grateful,

Dan, Lynn, Molly, and Joe.
