Journal

Starting July 17th, my mother will be returning to the hospital for another 8-10 weeks. In this time she will be going trough 3-4 rounds of chemo with one week on and one week off. The goal is to reduce the current cancer cell counts to a level acceptable for a stem cell transplant to take place.

Stem Cell Transplant, First a suitable donor must be tested and found. Overall it is likely a donor is available and a transplant is an option. The challenge here is going to come down to a decision on whether or not to move forward with the procedure.

Below I will bullet point the statistics that were given to us.

  • Two year survival rate without transplant is 30%.
  • Transplant procedure itself has a 60% chance of success.
    • In the remaining 40% rejection takes place and survival is unlikely
  • Two year survival rate with a successful transplant is 50%.
  • Survival rates do not increase over time. Meaning if 2 years is 50%, year 3 would also be 50%.

All of this excludes a gene mutation we were also informed of today. This mutation increases the rate of reoccurrence within one year. In the case of reoccurrence any continued treatment would be unlikely.
