Joan’s Story

Site created on January 16, 2019

On December 16th, Joan was admitted to St. Mary's hospital and diagnosed with a cancerous, glioblastoma brain tumor. On Monday, January 14th, she underwent two lengthy brain tumor surgeries. The surgeon, Dr. Lozier, was able to remove about 70% of the tumor. Here, we will track her recovery and provide our family and friends with updates as they come.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lisa Ellis

It's been a super long time since we've posted, so I figured I'd write an update.  We haven't written in awhile because mom's been pretty much the same.  She is still paralyzed on the right side, and her thoughts and speech are most clear before I'd say 2 PM.  She receives occasional therapy, but much less intense than a few months ago.  She is in long-term care and no longer in rehab.  She moved to long-term care towards the end of April.  She will be there until her needs require hospice.

The baby shower perked her up in ways, but in some ways left her sad and wishing things were different.  It was an emotional day for all.  Dan and Amanda did a great job hosting the shower!  Mom is able to eat pretty much anything and spends her days enjoying visitors and watching movies.  We are trying to encourage her to join in other activities, but she just wants to be left in peace most days.  Now that the weather is nicer she enjoys short trips outdoors and we also try to bring her tasty treats like diet coke, baked goods and cheeseburgers.  The food she is served in long-term care is mostly pretty good, but there are days when the option of minced meat and gravy with bland veggies has her turn her nose up longing for something better.  Can't blame her-I wouldn't want to eat that either!  Trust me, I've seen it:).  One day it's a great looking brat with sides, then maybe a tasty pasta, but then...mystery meat haha.  Thank you for the continued prayers for her strength and comfort.  We'd love more than anything for mom to make it through summer so she can meet her grandbaby!
