Newest Update

Journal entry by Jessica Gaskins

It's been a rough couple weeks.  I woke up on 2 Saturdays ago with hives on my scalp, neck and face.   Decided I was going to go to Alpha Care Urgent Care.  I started getting ready, ADD-ed a few times which resulted in it taking me a really long time to get ready to go.  Then Riley starts screaming like she's dying.  We loaded her in the car and we go to the Pediatric Urgent Care on HWY 96.  They told us to take her to the pediatric ER in Macon immediately, so we rushed her there.  She has lower left abdomen pain.  We were taken back quickly, but waited HOURS to see the doctor and get some tests done and the results back from those.  Dr. G did bloodwork, urine and a CT.  He comes in without an answer, tells me maybe she's constipated.  She's still screaming like she's dying, so he doses her with pain meds tells us to go home and take MiraLAX for constipation.  I had serious doubts with his diagnosis,.  Then he proceeds to tell me that the ER is only there to diagnosis emergencies and I'll need to take her to her pediatrician if it's anything else.  I was livid, but I'm not a doctor and she stopped screaming after the pain meds,  so I'm doubting myself and I took her home and did what he said.  We didn't get home until 4am.

My hives have migrated to my torso, AlphaMed is closed on Sundays.  I really didn't want to go sit in a regular Urgent Care for hours with lots of sick people and my weakened immune system so I decide to wait it out and just be at my primary care physician at 7am when they open Monday morning.  My doctor allows walk-ins for sick visits thankfully.  I started taking Benadryl and cold baths to try and calm the hives.  The Benadryl knocked me out, so I lay down to take a nap and wake up to Riley screaming again.  Folded up in a ball on the floor of the bathroom.  We head back to the Pediatric ER in Macon.  We are taken straight back and we see a new doctor who orders a x-ray and sonogram of Riley's ovaries and tubes.  She does tell me that she sees a cyst on the left ovary and that I need to call my pediatrician and have him refer her to GYN to keep an eye on it.  She fails to tell me how large it is, then proceeds to tell me that she sees a large pocket of gas on the x-ray and she thinks it's trapped gas.  She tells me Riley isn't constipated and to stop doing what Dr. G said to do.  Then she doses her with pain meds and a GI cocktail and sends us home.

Monday morning the hives now cover me head to toe, even my lips are starting to swell.  I'm walking in the garage to get into the SUV and suddenly I'm on the floor, so I've got some wonderful purple bruises.  Stupid feet don't work right but at least I didn't break a rib with this fall.  I do end up at my primary care doctor at 7am, get a steroid shot, a Benadryl shot and a steroid pack to treat the hives.  I'm being sent for allergy testing next week to see if there is something food wise or environmental getting me.  So I go home and pass out from the Benadryl.  I'm woken up again to Riley screaming telling us she can't do this.  She thinks she's dying.  So we rush her back to the pediatric ER.  We see the same doctor that diagnosed her with gas.   She doses her with pain meds another GI cocktail and admits us, so the team upstairs can figure out what's wrong.

We get upstairs around 4am, there's only enough room for one parent to sleep and of course my baby wants her mama, so I'm staying.  David goes home to take care of the dog and comes back early the next morning.  All the night shift did was control her pain.  The daytime shift comes in and a team of doctors comes to see us.  They say the cyst on her ovary is 7cm and her ovary is only 5cm.  They are concerned that her ovary is intermittently torqueing (flipping over) due to the weight of the cyst and it's location.  Which could lead to ovary death and then her death if it's not caught and treated in time.  GYN is called in for a consult, and they decide to take her back to surgery as soon as they can get an OR.  She had emergency surgery just a couple hours later.  They removed the cyst, flipped the ovary back over into the correct place and were able to save the ovary.  We were kept overnight because it's a pretty major surgery.  She woke up at 4am in the hospital screaming like she was dying again.  I was so thankful we were in the hospital.  The room filled with doctors and nurses.  There was some hemorrhaging from the bladder having to be moved to get the ovary back into place, along with the trapped gas used from surgery.  They treated her and got her pain levels under control and got her back to bed.  We didn't get released until late that evening, getting home around 7pm.

I was exhausted, still on Benadryl for hives, plus my GI issues from my cancer meds.  David said he'd take the night shift, so I could get some rest and I could take over when I woke up.  So for a few days we worked like that to keep her pain meds in her system and stay on top of things. Wednesday she has some further complications, which we have to go see the doctor about but we got that situated and were sent back home.  Everything else went smoothly from there, just controlling her pain.

Sunday I wake up and my Hives are back.  Back at the primary care doctor at 7am on Monday.  Another steroid shot, Benadryl shot and steroid pack.  On the upside Riley is feeling a lot better and only taking Motrin and Tylenol when she has pain at this point so we don't have to take shifts to take care of her and I can focus on trying to take care of me.

I got my recumbent bike for physical therapy and I'm religiously riding it for the amount of time assigned daily.  They are starting me at level 1 for 15 minutes a day.  I'll eventually move up on time and levels until I get to 45 minutes.  I want to get my strength back so bad that I want to rush it and go straight for the 45 minutes a day, but I'm completely exhausted after the 15 minutes, covered in sweat and need a nap.  My stamina is terrible from fighting cancer for 3 years but I'm determined to get better.   I won't rush it.  I'll do exactly what they tell me.  I'm going to beat this and get my strength back!
