Jenny’s Story

Our wonderful Jenny has been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.  It came as a shock as she just had her mammogram and it said that she was clear.  Just a little backstory, she just had her first mammogram.  In August, she went in and they found a little blip on the screen. It was biopsied and it came back clear.  We celebrated.  A few weeks later, she got a call and her doctor recommended that because she has dense tissue, maybe we should do another procedure (MBI) where they pump radioactive dye into her system and see if it attaches to cancer cells.  This was going to be done just as a precaution, they had no idea anything was hiding.   We decided to get this done and that is when our nightmarish battle began.  She was officially diagnosed with breast cancer on Sept. 20th.

The bad news is:
The tumor is large.
The cancer is stage 3.
It's growing aggressively.

The Good news:
She is being treated at the Mayo Clinic and her team is made up of the best that Mayo has to offer.  Therefore, in my opinion, this means we have the best Breast Cancer team in world working for us.  
As of right now, Jenny qualifies to be part of a newer treatment trial called "I SPY-2."   This trial has shown great success with treating her kind  of cancer (HER2+ ER- PR-). 
Throughout the trial, she will be getting extensive monitoring (MRI's, CT Scans etc., ) for the entire treatment.  One major benefit of this trial is that her Chemo will target specific cells and hopefully lessen the damage to healthy cells.    
Mayo also has one of the most advanced Proton Beam Radiation treatments in the nation.  This means after surgery, the damage to surrounding tissues during radiation treatment will hopefully be limited.


Our Plan of attack:  Chemo will hopefully begin on Halloween.  As soon as we get the tumor down to a manageable size (between 12 and 30 weeks of Chemo), Jenny will have surgery, recovery and then begin a series of Proton Beam Radiation treatments.  It has not been determined if her Chemo will be weekly, every other week or every three weeks.  We are hoping to be cancer free by next summer.  Please keep Jenny in your prayers and keep those words of encouragement coming.

Hi Everyone.  
Thank you so much for your prayers.  Jenny's surgery went well yesterday.  She is such a trooper.  She is in a bit of pain at times, but so far she's been able to rest.  Tomorrow we get to add ibuprofen to her pain fighting regimen, so hopefully that will help. Her restrictions and the pain associated with them are preventing her from doing much, but after everything she's been through, she needs rest.  Thank you all so much for everything.  Have a wonderful day and God Bless.
