Jennifer’s Story

Site created on October 13, 2022

On Tuesday evening, October 11th, Jennifer suffered from a significant and unexpected stroke. After a few days of feeling unwell, Jennifer's symptoms deteriorated, and it was clear that she needed urgent medical attention. Throughout the day on Wednesday, Jennifer's team of doctors worked to assess her needs. As the day continued and her scans showed increased swelling in her brain, her team and family decided to operate to relieve the pressure in her Brain and remove the blood clot that had caused the stroke. The surgery helped to alleviate swelling and made it easier for doctors to see the clot. On Thursday morning, after some of the swelling receded,  it became clear that the clot forming in her brain needed attention quickly and through different interventions. By Thursday evening, Jennifer was back in the operating room for another attempt to remove the large clot causing the bleeding in her Brain. By late Thursday night, Jennifer's doctors completed the surgery and believe that they have restored the flow of blood away from her Brain from 0%- 70%. Jennifer still has a long and challenging path, but this was a huge step in getting her on the road to recovery.

Over the last several days, Jennifer, Sam, Eliana, and Sarah have been embraced in love and support from family, friends, and the community. Jennifer's family and close friends have been at her side since Tuesday night at the hospital and supporting the girls at home.

We'll continue to update this site as new and relevant information becomes available. The extended Joel's family has been overwhelmed by the love and support over the last several days. There will be many needs and ways to support the family in the days and weeks ahead. For now, a meal train has been set up and linked here. Please feel free to comment here to offer support and care.

Journal entry by Sara Levitt

Queen Jen’s cranioplasty surgery yesterday was a success! The team went in to reattach a piece of her skull that was removed during surgery in the fall. This will help Jen continue to heal. She is now resting and will remain at the hospital for a few days. We are so thankful for the surgical and medical teams that have seen her through this journey.

The Meal Train has been set up for a few meals in the next little bit to help the Joels family as Jen continues to recover.  You can find the Meal Train here:

What is Meal Train?

There are times in our lives when friends and family ask, "What can I do to help out?" The answer is usually to help them with a meal. When many friends provide support through a meal, Meal Train keeps everyone organized.
