My old Mentor and friend Ken Davis once told me there are four things that can’t be taken from you:

Your God

Your Family

Your Friends, and

Your word.

After 365 days, I have found this to be true. My life changed completely a year ago or so it would seem. Somehow through comas, surgeries, catastrophic events and the grand tour of some of the finest hospitals Minnesota has to offer, I’m still not dead yet.

Yep it’s pretty much sucked big time, but along the way I’ve found some joy. The people who’ve cared for me, helped me to walk and talk and breathe again. Convinced me I can do better the next day.

I have been humbled by the gifts of friendship both old and new. Overwhelmed by the number of people who call me friend. Thankful for those who have supported me with the treasures of words and prayers and love and encouragement. Must make me the richest man in town.

I guess this has been my George Baily moment.

The Grim Reaper had more than one chance to make off with me. Perhaps he didn’t think my jokes were that funny or my sometimes acerbic nature was irritating as hell, but each time he let me be. I like to think there’s still something more for me.

Like my Word, my Friends, my Family, and my God.
