Jean’s Story

Site created on January 31, 2008

Welcome to Jean's CaringBridge site!

This site was started in 2008 when Jean was initially diagnosed with breast cancer on 1/4/08.  Then she underwent chemo, radiation and a single mastectomy and has been cancer free for many years.  Jean has continued with annual follow ups with oncology and other doctors.  About 6 weeks ago she noticed a concerning lump in her neck.  She went to the doctor about 3 weeks ago and had a CT scan of her neck and chest. The neck CT was concerning so she had an ultrasound guided biopsy on 4/22/22. The results show that the breast cancer has returned and she will now follow treatment to fight this new fight.  This site will follow her through treatment and will be maintained by Jean and her daughter, Julie, to keep people updated on her progress.

Previous background information from 2008:
Jean found a lump in her breast in December 2008 and decided to have her doctor look at it. He ordered a mammogram and ultrasound for the end of December. It was so small that they weren't going to do anything at first, but decided to do a biopsy of the lump because it showed some abnormal cells. A biopsy was done January 2, 2008 and the results came back on January 4, 2008 showing cancer.

She met with a surgeon who decided a lumpectomy was in her best interest because the lump was so small. Jean had surgery on January 24, 2008 to remove the lump. During the surgery, the doctor found more cancer than was expected. There was cancer in the lymph nodes and the muscle/tissue that was tested.  Jean will start chemo before determining future treatment.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Julie Williams

Jean met with her oncologist today to review scans that were done this month and for the second set of scans in a row they are clear and all looks normal. The doctor feels Jean is in FULL REMISSION!!! This is such great news. The cancer journey is certainly a rollercoaster and Jean has definitely had her ups and downs, but we will take this great news and thank the Lord! God is good.

Since she was given the stage 4 diagnosis at the start of this, the doctor is taking no chances and will continue the oral chemo regimen indefinitely to keep this monster at bay. She gets to move to appointments and blood work every 2 months though which will seem like a huge break from the every 3 weeks she has currently been doing.  She will not have to do scans as often either but will if there are any new spots and such.  Jean also will meet with a new specialist soon to follow up on lymphedema that she had been treated for before just to work on rage of motion, etc. This is due to having all her lymph nodes removed in one arm during the first round of cancer. She hasn't follow up with anyone for a bit and the doctor thinks it would be good to do so.
