Sincere apologies for taking so long to update this site. It's been a hectic month!
Jeanne is working hard at rehabilitation, and is slowing gaining more functioning in her right side. She has gotten a good deal of her language back, and it seems like her memory has returned to almost pre-stroke levels. She loves her physical therapist, and today, she had an excellent session with the occupational therapist. Her movement is still limited--she requires a lift to get from her bed to her chair--but she is working hard on her exercises and will hopefully gain back a lot of movement and function in the next six weeks. Her PT is very pleased by her progress and is recommending continued therapy for at least the next month, likely longer. Apparently, the more progress you make in therapy, the longer they will recommend it, because it means that it has continued to be useful.
She was able to leave the facility with special medical transport and visit a neurological ophthalmologist who put special tape on her glasses and gave her some eye-strengthening exercises. With these supports, Jeanne seems to be having an easier time seeing and doing things like reading. Jeanne has loved reading all of your cards!
At Jeanne's urging, she has been upgraded to regular food, which is good because she hated the ground-up soft foods plan. She doesn't like a lot of the food, and it seems like the stroke may have changed her tastes significantly, but she has had a number of things recently that she really enjoyed, including some great fried chicken and some pulled barbeque. The lobster bisque we are bringing in from Trader Joe's seems to be a big hit.
Ideally, Jeanne will be able to move into an apartment with a health aid, which will allow her a lot more independence than she has in the rehab, but it will depend on how much movement she is able to recover in the next few months. We are fighting to get her the maximum support possible, and so far, she is receiving high-quality care and treatment. We are looking forward to being able to take her outside more, now that the weather is getting milder.
