Newest Update

Journal entry by Kat Golightly

A little late update, but an important one nonetheless.

Mom had her CT scan about a week and a half a go and we got the good news that it was clear of any visible cancer! Yippee!! We are so thankful. Going into ‘scan week’ we were confident that everything would be just fine. However, we were confident that after mom’s surgery months ago that the biopsies would be fine as well. Cancer is evil and evasive that way, coming up when you would never expect it.

At mom’s latest appointment they let her know that if we did ‘nothing’ then the chance of reoccurrence is close to 80%. I had NO idea it would be that high. Thankfully, her doctor had a plan and will have mom start oral chemo. She will be on this for the rest of her life. The specific medication mom needs is close to 26,000$ a month without insurance, financial aid. I run into this problem frequently at work with my own patients and I know that there is a slow process of getting the medication approved, applying for financial assistance, prior authorizations with insurance, etc. Currently in the process we have the med down to about 900$ a month. I’m confident that it will come down much more, but prayers are appreciated.

How timely that the Lady Gryphon’s Soccer team asked mom to come to school one day last week without her knowing why. She showed up to the girls after school who presented her a check! The team had a fundraiser for mom! For every goal the girls made, parents/people pledged money to support Jean. How amazing. Mom was in shock. thank you Lady Gryphons! We are thankful for great insurance, but this process has not been inexpensive. God knows our needs and meets them in the most creative ways.

So, what is next? Mom wants to start traveling slowly again in the coming months to visit many of you who love her! (assuming she can get her COVID vaccine soon and Covid calms down). So if you’d like mom to come visit- reach out to me or her! Mom’s blood counts are recovering nicely and although it still scares us that mom could get COVID, she is not as vulnerable as she was just two months ago.
Then in march mom will start flying again with American Airlines and get back to living her best life!
