Jaxtyn’s Story

Site created on January 7, 2022

As many have heard and for those who haven’t, our baby boy Jaxtyn (5 month old) got very sick out of nowhere Monday night (January 3rd). At 10pm he was fussing and not acting like himself we brought him into bed with us to monitor and comfort him where he projectile vomited at around midnight. We also noticed he was super hot and burning up so we put cold towels on his head and gave him Tylenol which seemed to break his fever which at the time was 102. He slept until 5am had a 6oz bottle then continued to sleep until 9:30am Tuesday morning. He woke up seemed to be better was smiling and acting like himself so we thought is was maybe just the regular Flu, but then got real drowsy again, his fever came back and he tried throwing up once again. We called into New Ulm medical center where we usually doctor to get an opinion on whether or not we should bring him in. After a couple hrs (around 1pm) with no call back yet we said enough was enough and we brought him in. We finally got admitted to an ER room where we could see his color was not normal almost grey looking and he had a 104 temp. From there they took blood samples put an IV in him to give him fluids along with oxygen. Tested negative for Influenza A and B along with Covid. From there bad turned to worse he got transferred by ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis around 10 and arrived at midnight. We were put in an ER room waiting for a bed to open until 10am the next day. From there he was put on antibiotics to take care of what they thought was just a respiratory infection but after more tests, labs, and cultures it was determined he has Ear Infection, Haemophilus Influenzae (blood infection), Meningitis, with a slight respiratory infection. Of course more bad news… we were then told once they pin pointed the problem and got the right antibiotic going we will be here a minimum of 7 more days 😞😔. At this time he is completely off his oxygen, starting to eat a little bit again and the fevers have been limited. We are still waiting on the full results from his spinal tap to see if the infection is for sure in the fluid around the spinal cord and brain to determine the correct antibiotic to give him. Looking at the preliminary results they did see a lot of white blood cells which is telling them there is infection. As far as we have been told it’s just simply bad luck. But they say he looks really good for what he’s been through and going through. It appears we are definitely heading in the right direction 🙏🏻 Jaxtyn has been such a trooper through all of this. Mom and Dad have been trying to keep it together for him standing by his side, holding his hand, and he definitely knows we are here! This is by far the hardest unimaginable thing we have went thru but we are managing❤️ We ask for continued thoughts and prayers 🙏🏻 as we are impatiently waiting for the day we get to return home to family, our dog tucker, and his wild big sister Braelynn which we miss so much!

Journal entry by Lindsey Davis

Jaxtyn had another MRI on 7-8 and we received the BEST news! The pocket of fluid/infection is completely GONE!! 🙌🏻 He does still have excess fluid surrounding his brain, but that has been decreasing with each visit. He will have 1 more MRI in 3 months and then he should be done! Neurology said it would be very rare/strange for him to need to have any of the fluid drained at this point anymore. We are so proud and so thankful for our tough little boy and the recovery he has made! 💙
