Janna’s Story

I never thought I’d be posting this! I have been diagnosed with stage 2 anal cancer.

How did I find this out? I got E.Coli back In January 2020. (Thanks Ensenada!) OMG I was so sick. After I recovered I developed what I thought was an internal hemorrhoid. Since it was during the COVID shutdown I could only do a virtual visit with the gastroenterologist. She agreed that all my symptoms sounded just like an internal hemorrhoid. She told me about the procedure to treat it. She explained that l, before they could treat it, I would need a colonoscopy as a regular course of treatment. Also, I’m 48 so close enough to 50 when you are supposed to get a baseline colonoscopy.

Had the colonoscopy and the doc said it was not an internal hemorrhoid, it was a polyp. He removed it with clean margins.

On Wednesday, June 17 I got the call that every person dreads. It’s cancer. Wait! What?!

I met my oncologist today to discuss treatment. I will have two scans of the abdomen - an MRI and a CT. Hopefully there are no lymph nodes that are affected. Right now it is stage 2a. Lymph node involvement would change that.

Anal cancer is hard to treat just due to its location. You can’t just do a surgery and chop it out. So... the plan is 6 weeks of chemoradiation.

week 1: chemo and 5 radiation treatments
week 2: 5 radiation treatments
week 3: 5 radiation treatments
week 4: 5 radiation treatments
week 5: chemo and 5 radiation treatments
week 6: 5 radiation treatments

Goodbye long blonde locks! 😩

Hi everyone,
It has been SO LONG since I last posted. I have been moving along in recovery.

My hair is filling in really well. I have been using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner which is made to thicken hair. I think it really works. I don't have any more bald or patchy spots. I look like someone who chose to chop off their hair. It's coming back the same color and isn't being weird or curly. I am heading towards a lovely Karen hairstyle.

I have started pelvic floor physical therapy. It sucks. 😩 It's invasive and painful. Does it hurt here? How about here? Yes? 😱 Ok, I will press harder. 😳 Only about 12 more weeks. YAY. 😬

Here's the good news...
I saw the colorectal surgeon on November 20th. He did a scope and says there is some scar tissue (as expected) but that everything looks "outstanding".
On Monday, November 30th I had my post-treatment MRI. Not too bad (thanks Valium for dealing with some of the claustrophobia).
On Tuesday, December 1st I saw my medical oncologist. Blood work is all within normal range. The MRI shows some swelling and some scar tissue (both completely normal).
And...drum roll please...the doctor told me that I am in COMPLETE REMISSION and have NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE. 😁 😎 😍
That is the best possible news.😃
I will still have more scans (March 2021 and then annually) and will alternate between the surgeon and medical oncologist every 3 months. But I am now in the surveillance phase and no longer have any active bad guys running around in my system.
