Jan’s Story

Site created on February 27, 2023

Hello Everyone, On Feb. 2nd, 2023, I was diagnosed with a large lemon size mass in my left chest wall.  A biopsy was incomplete.  It appears to be a very slow growing mass that has been there for a while. A recent PET scan that lights up cancer cells revealed no cancer in any other part of my body, including the low activity of the mass.  (Although I have a history of breast cancer, this mass is unrelated.  Of this, the doctors are certain.)    We are presently consulting with several cancer institutes, including Mayo, to try and get the right diagnosis.  Treatment can not begin until the doctors know what to treat.   I appear to be a model of good health.  My days are filled with good times and humor, singing, and volunteering.  In fact, I volunteered for a church rummage sale last week.  I must say, however, that I have had modest pain since the diagnosis related to the position of my arm.    My prayer is for the right diagnosis and the best treatment, including a cardiothoracic surgeon.   Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.  They are a treasure to me.   Love,  Jan

Journal entry by Jan McDermott

Hello Everyone,

What an exciting week it has been.  First of all, I believe that this is my 50th journal post.  I can hardly believe this.  Thank you for all of your prayers and support over the last 14 months.   It's been long and difficult but through it all I have felt supported and encouraged.  You are my golden treasures of prayer.

My visit to Mayo Clinic was preempted by my MRI news that the tumor had gone from 8.6 cm or 3.39 inches to 5.14 cm or 2.13 inches.  With that information, it was decided to pause the treatment until July.  Tumors such as this have been known to continue to shrink after discontinuation of treatment.   An MRI in July will then reveal the situation and we will decide what to do next.  This hiatus will allow the hair loss to lesson and the skin color changes to return to normal and so much more.

"When I give you no special guidance, stay where you are.  Concentrate on doing your everyday tasks in awareness of My Presence with you.  Be thankful for quiet days, when nothing special seems to be happening.  Instead of being bored by the lack of action, use times of routine to seek My Face.  Although this is an invisible transaction, it speaks volumes in Spiritual realms."   Jesus Calling 4/13

"He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.  He restores my soul;" Ps. 23

I trust that these quieter days will be filled with joy and hope.  It's been a privilege to share my stories and to receive your responses.  I think that my journaling will be a little less frequent, but it all depends on the Spirit's leading.   We leave for our summer in BV in the middle of May.  There's nothing boring about packing up and moving.  I would love to hear from you when you are so moved.

Love, Jan  <><
