Journal

As many of you know Janice and I flew back to my home in Atlanta in October. This was mainly to keep her safe and to wait out the pandemic until she could get the COVID vaccine.  Luckily, Janice, Jeff, and I in early February were able to get the Pfizer vaccine that Kathleen has been helping work on. We were able to spend Thanksgiving with Peri, Chelsea, and her husband John; we were able to sit outside on the deck to enjoy the beautiful weather and the dinner that Jeff, Peri, and Chelsea made.  Around Christmas, we were here in Atlanta and Kathleen and Tricia were able to stop in for a quick visit.

On February 17th, Janice fell and fractured a vertebra in her back and sacrum. While getting CT and MRI scans in the ER, the radiologist found a tumor on her pancreas. She was able to get a kyphoplasty surgery for the vertebra in her back to relieve some of the pain. After the kyphoplasty, the doctors still wanted to do additional tests and MRIs, but Janice decided that she just wanted to come home.  The idea of more tests and prolonging her hospital stay was just too much for her to take on at 87 years young.

My Mom has come back to our home where we have hospice coming in for her comfort.  At this point, she is extremely weak and in pain due probably to a variety of things including the fractured vertebras and possibly the cancer. Although things could change any day, since being home, she continues to tell Peri (who is in Physical Therapy school) that she wants to sit and stand up daily. But while she is not being her ambitious self, she is continually comforted by her dog Josh, other household visiting animals, and some soft jazz in the background.

So many people have reached out and sent cards and please know that they are much appreciated.  We have been reading her all the notes along with the cards. Today when I was reading someone’s card to her that said they were sending hugs, she thought she heard me say they were sending wine.  I know this must be because she remembers all of the wonderful times she was sitting and laughing with all of her friends while having a glass of wine.

We really cannot thank you all who have reached out enough.  Every card and note brings a smile to her face and I’m sure she wishes she could see all of you in person to thank you herself.

We will try and update this as we can, but please know Janice is of course our top priority. But feel free to send this link to any and all of her friends and family.

Thanks,

Mala
