Janiah’s Story

Site created on June 27, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting!

I am creating this site to document Janiah's journey with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), also known as pseudotumor cerebri. It will also serve as a place where family and friends can read updates and where Janiah can add some of her personal experiences or just vent.

She was first diagnosed in 2013 so there's a considerable amount of backstory to tell, which could be quite lengthy. I'll do the best I can.
(Remainder of story coming soon)

First off, what is IIH? See these links for the answer: https://weillcornellbrainandspine.org/condition/pseudotumor-cerebri and  https://ihrfoundation.org/hypertension/info/C62

I HAVE NOT HAD A CHANCE TO COMPLETE THIS BACK-STORY, BUT WILL DO SO AS SOON AS I CAN. THERE'S JUST SO MUCH...

Newest Update

Journal entry by Mary Grider

Hello to all,
I want to share a brief update... and it is positive! 😀
Last Wednesday, the day after Janiah's visit with her optometrist, her neurologist (Dr. Smartt) called in a prescription for Lasix. Many of you probably know that Lasix is a diuretic. So the goal was for the Lasix to help reduce the CSF pressure build up inside Janiah's skull (in and around the brain). The instructions were 20mg a day for 3 days then bump up to 40mg/day plus a potassium supplement each time she takes the Lasix. By Thursday (Aug. 6th) Janiah was starting to feel some pressure/pain relief.
I also want to add that on Sunday Aug 2nd at church (Berean Bible Church), our pastor (Charles Simmons, Sr.) anointed her forehead with oil and prayed for her health and her healing. Little did we know at the time that Janiah also had a 5cm ovarian cyst that would send her to the ER that very night. But God knew. God operates in his timing and answers prayers as He wills and uses resources as He wills or simply gives the command. My desire is to simply trust him day by day and moment by moment, regardless of circumstances.

All of that said, Janiah has felt WELL for a full FIVE days in a row as of today!! Praise the Lord!! We are so thankful to God and to all of you for your prayers for her. Her spirits have been up... she did her laundry, cleaned her room, visited a friend, and has been laughing and smiling. Such a wonderful blessing!!

I am so thankful for our Berean family... for the Simmons family and their faithfulness to pray for her... For Ruth Williams, who sang a song offering encouragement to her... to Susan and Steve who have been on their knees praying for her ... and I'm sure many others who send up prayers that I don't even know about.

Tomorrow morning Janiah has her first appointment with a neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr. Ko, downtown at the Neuroscience Center (thanks to her optometrist, Dr. Mark Snyder, for making the referral). He wrote a very detailed report which he sent to Dr. Smartt and the neuro-ophthalmologist, describing her worsening papilledema. Because he clearly communicated the urgency of the situation, Dr. Smartt started her on Lasix and the neuro-ophth. set her up for a new patient appointment quite quickly.

oh, and regarding the ovarian cyst, Janiah has had no more pain from that for 6 days. She does, however, have a follow-up appointment with a gynecologist and they will do another ultrasound to see if it has dissolved.

Again, many thanks and much love to you all. God is good. Always.

Love,
Mary
