Janelle’s Story

Site created on October 8, 2023

I have the most amazing big brother anyone could ask for. Over the past several years, he has faced so many trials and displayed the amazing grit and grace that make him one of my heroes. The most pressing of those trials is the fact that he has a failing liver that, unless he can receive a transplant, will ultimately take his life. As I have researched, processed, and prayed, I have learned that a family member can be a great match as a living donor for a recipient in need of a liver transplant. I have taken all of the tests and have been chosen to donate the right lobe of my liver and give it to him. Surgery date is December 12, 2023.

I'm not gonna lie, having this surgery will be a lot.  Many people have asked how they can help, we have created a Google Doc Spreadsheet with ways you can come alongside us.  Simply fill in your name and phone number.  Since I will be recovering, no one will be able to send you a reminder.  Google Doc:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/144EvFziTm30Ys6kOFuM__clV6F4TEeZwWyi8MLtAdfo/edit?usp=sharing

We are hoping to have our kids come join us in North Carolina; where the surgery is happening, so we can spend Christmas together.  Since it is Christmas time, flights and housing are extra high. The funding I am receiving only covers my expenses, not my family.  If you would like to donate financially, please Venmo (https://venmo.com) @Janelle-Prenkert  .  Thanks for supporting us!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Janelle Prenkert

Hi Everyone. So sorry it has been a very long time since our last update.  Many have been asking how Matt and I are doing post surgery so I thought I should post again.

Matt:
He is doing really well. He has good and bad days, but is trending great.  The pain is still very present and although it is fading, the brain fog remains. If he tries and does too much, he will pay for it the next day and has to take it slow the next day or two.

For having 3 major surgeries within a month, he is doing amazingly.  I am so proud of him and his improvement.  He is a rock star!

Here are some accomplishments over the last few weeks:
  • Walked 1.5 miles, ran for 100 meters
  • Played catch with his son

Janelle:
A few weeks ago I flew back down to UNC for a follow up checkup.  Everything is healing well and my liver should be at 100% size now.  It only took 3 months to fully grow back.  God is simply amazing.

I am feeling really well, I still have some pain, but not much.  My energy level is about 85%.  Although my brain thinks it is at 115%.  I love that I can get back to doing projects again, but I have to remind myself not to take it too hard.  Otherwise I am laying down the next day, which may not be a bad thing. LOL

My weight limit has increased to 20 lbs for the next 5 months.  That one is a bummer for me with summer around the corner, but I can manage.  Because of the pound increase I can now work again in the baby nursery at church.  Last night was my first night back.  It was so much fun, but again I need to watch how many babies I pick up off the floor. LOL

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.  We are constantly blown away at how many people have been praying for us over the past 3 months!
