Brenna’s Story

Site created on February 5, 2024

Hi Family and Friends - I've been asked for updates and someone mentioned Caring Bridge may be the best way to share as we navigate Jamie's progress.

On Wednesday, January 24, Jamie collapsed in New York City on his way home from work.  He was not feeling well, rushing to the bus to get home, and fell head first into the sidewalk causing a significant brain bleed/traumatic brain injury (TBI).   After 10 days in the neuro ICU, he moved to their step down unit while he waits for approvals/referrals to finalize his move to an in-patient acute rehabilitation program (hopefully closer to home).

As of Tuesday,  February 13, he is medically doing much better and I am seeing some improvements each day.  He is remembering me and our children more each day - using our names in stories he shares.  He is still struggling with aphasia, memory issues, and confusion.  The process to move to rehab has many twists and turns, but hopefully that transfer will happen in the coming days.

As you can imagine, this is unbelievably hard for our family.  Colleen has been struggling, confused, and sad - Tommy is Tommy and asks some questions but moves on to the next thing fast.  In our trauma, we adopted a cat to cheer the three of us up (I hope Jamie won't be too upset when he does come home!).

Thank you to our wonderful Whaley and Hanson Families, our friends, and our Ramsey/Mahwah neighbors for your help and support over the last three weeks.  Your love and kindness to my family has literally kept me above water and I am forever grateful to you for all you have done and continue to do for us.

Please continue to pray and send positive/healing thoughts for Jamie's recovery - this is going to be a long road for him and all of us.

xoxo

Newest Update

Journal entry by B Whaley

Dearest Family and Friends,

The guy is home!  After some time at Burke in White Plains, he has moved home and will begin his outpatient rehabilitation closer to our house.  Physically, Jamie is doing well and will use PT to get stronger.  He needs work on his speech, language and memory, but can do the work from home/outpatient basis.

Thank you for all the prayers and well wishes during this difficult time.  Keep them coming as Jamie continues to heal.
