Anchorage resident Staff Sgt. James "Jim" Hendricks Manco Sr., 65, died Feb. 5, 2008, at Third Medical Group Hospital, Elmendorf Air Force Base. A private viewing for family was at the Anchorage Funeral Home. A memorial service for friends and family was held at the Veterans Administration Post Chapel in Martinsburg, W.V., conducted by Chaplain Berry Phillips. His family wrote: "Jim will rest beneath the aurora-filled Alaska skies at Fort Richardson National Cemetery after a service with full military honors."

Jim was born Jan. 22, 1943, to Joseph A. Manco and Mary J. Posante in Cleveland, Ohio. Staff Sgt. Manco served 10 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. His career included stations in Okinawa, Japan; Quantico, Va.; Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington, D.C. He was a Vietnam veteran, volunteer hazmat handler and firefighter, and was the inspector on the Savoonga Alaska Island road expansion project for Rodney P. Kinney Associates Inc., naming "Anniversary Square" the main intersection of town. He retired from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' department of infrastructure. Jim was a member of the Church of Christ. "He honored God, country and family," his family reflected. "Jim's talents and skills were varied and inspiring. A true craftsman, he put his heart and soul into everything he did. Embracing each new adventure, he enjoyed drag racing, diesel trucks, R/C airplanes and helicopters, mechanics, photography, astronomy, cooking, printing, RV travel, gold panning and spending time with his family. On a trip to Florida in 2004, he was knighted Lord James Manco Sr. by a medieval organization. He does honor to that title with his unconditional love, kindness, honesty and genuineness toward others. But the titles he held most dear were beloved husband, Dad, Papa and friend. He remains an inspiration to all who have met him. He was a pillar of strength, a shoulder of comfort, a beacon of light, a mentor, friend and a truly kind man. Dad has given us all of the good stuff. The world will be less grand without Jim, but heaven will be enriched. Today, we celebrate the privilege of sharing Jim's life on this earth, and embrace the honor of being the vessels for his everlasting spirit."

Jim is survived by his soulmate and wife of 45 years, Margarita "Peggie" Manco; his children, Donna "Dee" and husband Lee Lubbock Sr. of Eagle River, Jenniffer and husband Walter DeGroat III of Columbia, S.C., and James II and wife Stephanie Manco of Eagle River; his grandchildren, Sarah and Gregory Lubbock Jr., Brittney Gore-Lubbock, Koren, Kathryn, and Johnathan DeGroat, Christina and James Manco III; great-grandchild, Cristina Marie Lubbock; his siblings, Alice McChrystal, Vincent Manco, Richard Manco, Patricia Rini, Robert Manco and Joseph Manco Jr.; and his dearest and truest friends (alphabetically), Dr. Kenneth and Virginia Beale, Brunswick, Md.; Chris and Teresa Clanton, Martinsburg, W.V.; Robert and Nancy Tucker, Martinsburg; his "oldest living friend" or O.L.F., Vernon Harris, Florida; and his special dog, Sarah.
