Newest Update

Journal entry by Lori Useche

It has been way too long since we have updated you all.  Jaime is doing very well.  His treatment has had many changes.  At the end of August he had the PET scan which confirmed once again that there is no metastesis.  However, his post-operative PSA scores continued to rise, indicating the presence of roague cancer cells in the prostate area.  We consulted with the insurance approved doctor and his opinion was that no further treatment was necessary and told us to come back in January.  We rejoiced, but when we went to prayer felt no peace.

We decided to go for a second opinion with  the urologist who did the surgery and has been handling his care.  He had an entirely different opinion and was able to explain it in a way that brought us great peace.  He recommended immediate radiation therapy to eradicate all remaining cancer cells.  He further explained that with this treatment the probability of the cancer returning is very slim and Jaime’s long-term prognosis would be very positive.  He arranged for us to meet with the radiation oncologist that very same day.

So, on September 15 Jaime had the first of 30 radiation treatments.  He had daily treatments from Monday through Friday with the weekends off.  The treatments were not invasive or painful in any way, and the side effects were manageable, with the biggest effect being fatigue and low energy.  He did have to have a special diet and avoid all strenuous activity, but he tolerated the treatment quite well.

He had his last treatment on October 31, complete with a “graduation ceremony”.  During those six-weeks Jaime was able to share the gospel with every radiation technician who treated him, the other patients who were in the waiting room, and every Uber driver who drove us to and from the hospital.  In addition, he would take short walks through the neighborhood each day and had developed relationships with several people he saw daily.  He would pray with them, encourage them, and led several of them to the Lord.

We returned to Leticia on November 1 and Jaime has been gradually regaining his energy.  He still needs a little extra rest and to be careful with his diet, but he is doing very well.  So well in fact that this weekend he made his first trip to a river community to teach in an indigenous pastor´s gathering for three days.

Next week we will head back to Cali for the final follow-up appointment with the radiation oncologist and the normal quarterly check with the oncologist. We feel confident that it will go smoothly.

And the most exciting news is that we are making plans to finally travel to Arkansas on March 6th!  It is our greatest desire to get to see and many of you as possible and personally thank you for all your prayers and support in this journey.  Your messages and notes have been so encouraging and we are both overflowing with gratitude for the way God has cared for us and given us such wonderful friends and family.

Hope to see you soon. Till then we send you a virtual hug.
