Jack’s Story

Site created on November 2, 2022

On June 17, a golf-ball-sized tumor was found during a routine physical.  Two doctors and five appointments later,  it was removed on July 29 and sent to pathology. It turned out to be a rare pediatric cancer: embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. It is a soft tissue cancer that can be found anywhere in the body.  About 500 cases are diagnosed annually.

On September 8, Jack had 30 lymph nodes removed from his abdomen (this kind of rhabdomyosarcoma apparently usually spreads through the lymph nodes.) All of the lymph nodes tested negative for cancer cells.

Jack is currently in chemotherapy, which is scheduled to last until Easter 2023.

Journal entry by Amanda Woodiel

Dear Friends and Family,

Jack has his CT scan and PET scan yesterday.

The results?  No evidence of disease!   Can it be that we are really, actually finished?

My first thought upon awakening today was "my son had cancer.  He doesn't have it."  It's an awesome, dumbfounding reality we are stepping into.   We've made it to the finish line.

We are throwing a great big party to celebrate!  If you have supported us in any way (and by reading this blog, you have), we invite you to come to our home on May 13 between 2-8 p.m. to share our joy!  If you are able to make it, please send me a text or reply in the comments.

I don't have many more words, other than to thank you again.

Yours,

Amanda, for us all
