Jack’s Story

Site created on January 5, 2022

(Background story from December 29, 2021) As most of you know, Jack came home sick on December 9th, as illness was running rampant through the ROBS 7th grade class. We went to the doctor on December 10th to test for flu and COVID, but both were negative. He continued to deteriorate and I made another trip to the pediatrician the following week and then to an urgent care to try to find out exactly what was going on and if he was getting pneumonia. We got a diagnosis of the human metapneumovirus (similar to RSV) on December 16th which explained his cough, low grade fever, congestion, etc. The x-ray confirmed that he did not have pneumonia, but suggested bronchitis. They gave him antibiotics and a short course of steroids and sent us home. In the meantime, Jack grew weaker and weaker and by December 17th he could not walk from his bed to his bathroom without assistance. His voice became only audible by whisper and he could not sit up in bed. I took him to the TCH ER on December 18th where they ran bloodwork and gave him a bag of fluids. All his bloodwork looked within the normal range for having an upper respiratory infection so they sent us home. By Tuesday, December 21st, we returned to the pediatrician and our doctor said he had not seen anything like this weakness associated with the human metapneumovirus so he ordered several more tests and an echocardiogram which we had performed the following day. His echo came back okay but his bloodwork showed that he was positive for the Epstein Barr Virus which causes mono. I was relieved to get some sort of additional diagnosis that might explain his continued illness, but he has not turned the corner or progressed at all to this date. Our pediatrician referred us to a rheumatologist who we saw yesterday and she did a full blood work up and MRI which all came back normal. She is now recommending that we see a neurologist so we are in the process of trying to get that appointment. In the meantime, I have been told that the Epstein Barr virus can take months to recover from and that might be what I am looking at with Jack. I know many of you have been praying for him (and me) throughout this ordeal and I cannot thank you enough. We covet your prayers and we are now seeing this might be a very long journey back to health for Jack but we are confident that he is in God's hands and that the Lord will use this for our good and His purposes as he tells us in Romans 8:28.  I know many of you are sick or have had sickness in your family this Christmas - we are praying for health and healing for all of our friends! God gave me Isaiah 41:10 to cling to during this difficult time. It says, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Praying this over our family and yours this New Years. Thank you again for all your prayers for Jack - they are the best thing you can give.

Dear Friends and Family,

Jesus said in Luke 7:22  “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor."

We write with great joy and gratitude to God that Jack has continued to improve over the last week and not only can he walk, he can talk! His voice was a little slower to return than his legs, but it is now back in full force! Jack has been given the "all clear" by both the speech therapist and the physical therapists at TCH - a far different outcome than they had expected  when they first evaluated him, but everyone at the hospital is so happy for Jack! This week Jack has been able to attend school for a few hours each day and we will increase his time there next week so he can begin to catch up on all he has missed. He went for his first baseball workout today since becoming ill and he felt pretty good afterwards. We are trying to help him build back very slowly since he was down for so long.  Our infectious disease doctor at Texas Children's wants to continue to follow Jack's case as they have still not been able to determine the exact cause behind Jack's bizzare symptoms, but hopefully by tracking his bloodwork over time, the doctor will eventually get to the bottom of it!

For all of the fasting, praying, meals, texts, calls, and support you have given on behalf of Jack and our family, words cannot fully express our gratitude.   Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!  We have told Jack that people he doesn't even know have been praying for him all over the country - what a blessing!  As difficult as this journey has been we have found much treasure along the way as God has fulfilled his promise in Romans 8:28  "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Love,

Laura and William
