Newest Update

Journal entry by Shari Huber

2022 has been off to a crazy start! Those of you Quad City locals likely caught the article on our very courageous and resilient Jackie in the Quad City Times last week! Here is the link if you missed it: https://qctimes.com/news/local/a-former-rock-island-teacher-was-injured-in-a-freak-accident-her-friends-are-raising/article_a83ad55e-768b-5726-a99d-bf6400a62dfc.html#tracking-source=most-popular-news

Jackie had a good appointment in Iowa City since our last update. Thanks to Barb for helping for the long exhausting day! Her team is happy with how she is healing and all of her x-rays and tests came back great! Her spine is showing good bone growth over her hardware. which is what they want to see to know that the fusions are stable. Jackie is going to remain on antibiotics as long as she can tolerate to prevent infection.

The team in Iowa City were not pleased that Jackie’s insurance is not covering therapy. This has been quite the saga…and frustrating is not a strong enough word to describe it. Jackie’s doctors have been jumping through the hoops and playing the game of doing peer-to-peer reviews of Jackie’s case, appeals, more letters, and the whole drawn out process to try and justify Jackie’s therapy. Which seems ridiculous! Jackie’s Physical Therapist at Summit is really pulling hard for Jackie and providing rationale as to why Jackie is the perfect candidate for therapy and that her recovery depends on it. Barb is going through all the necessary steps to try and fight this thing…Jackie works so hard. Therapy allows that effort to keep being translated to functional gains.

She doesn’t just need it, she deserves it.

We will keep you posted on this process but so far…not so good. The only way Jackie can get the therapy she deserves is if she pays cash. We don’t want her to have to ration her funds when she is in the perfect window of time where she is making progress, getting stronger, gaining function every day. Thanks to everyone who continues to reach out, pray, and encourage Jackie along!
