Journal entry by Jenny Steffes (Haskin)

I started this page for my dear friend, Jackie and her family as they are up against the biggest battle to date. When my family needed help; Jackie and her family showed up in a big way.
It’s now time we show up for Jackie!
Jackie’s Story:
November 1st I went in for my yearly mammogram. Coming from a strong family of breast cancer survivors, 3 aunts, my mother are all breast cancer survivors and one aunt is uterine cancer survivor. Currently cousin on mother’s side age 43 same battle as me diagnosed in August.  Got a call back from OMC in Tuesday November 5th with a concern of something found on mammogram. Friday November 15th went into OMC for ultrasound guided biopsy of two spots of concern. Most awful phone call while operating my daycare business on Friday November 22nd.  One spot is DCIS and another spot is INVASIVE DUCTAL CARCINOMA. With the strong cancer beast threatening my future, my cancer doctor along with my myself and support of my family have chosen to have a double mastectomy with reconstruction. This will be a two part surgery with lots of recovery time and time taken away from my passion of operating my daycare.  Mayo Clinic appointments have been overwhelming with tons of info to take in and absorb but we have a game plan and with miracles unfolding, I’m already having my surgery this Monday December 9th. I will be off of work for 4-6 weeks with the praying that cancer hasn’t spread. If the cancer has spread or looks concerning than more time will be needed off of work to further go a treatment plan to promise me a healthy future.  Jackie is married to Jamie, her husband of 17years, has 3 young very active kids and currently cares for 10 daycare kiddos who she loves like her own!
No time is ever a good time for a diagnosis and a slap in the face but Christmas time just adds to the stresses of trying to keep cheerful and make the Christmas Spirit stay alive.

Thank you in advance for helping this incredible family during this very difficult time!
