Jackie’s Story

Site created on April 22, 2023

Jackie has been diagnosed with two types of breast cancer: Triple Negative (stage 2) and Hormone Receptor Positive (stage 1). Because of the aggressiveness of her cancer, Jackie's treatment will begin with 6 months of chemo and immunotherapy, then surgery, continuing with immunotherapy for another 6 months, medications, and possibly radiation. This will all be about a 1 year process. We are using this page  to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Updates will be posted under the "Journal" tab on this page. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Jackie Dixon

Well it's been a minute since we posted! We have been adjusting back into some normalcy again as a family and are doing well!

Yesterday was another milestone day--my last day of immunotherapy! I've completed my one-year treatment plan of going in for these infusions and I'm so grateful to be done! And next week I'll get my port taken out, which will be so freeing too! I was so glad Jake could be there with me yesterday. It was surreal for us to remember back to a year ago at this time, when we found out about my diagnosis. We've sat in these rooms and walked the hallways of this  hospital so many times, but yesterday we took in everything through reminiscent eyes...Remembering our hardest day when we were told this process was going to begin with 6 months of chemo, finding out I had a second type of breast cancer after the shock of learning about the first, remembering how overwhelmed and nervous we were feeling as we walked into my infusion room for the first day of chemo. And yesterday when I looked up at the empty bag on the IV pole once I was finished, it hit me--I'm done. We did it, that's a wrap!

We got to celebrate as a family last night by going out to dinner as a fam. It was such a joy to reflect together and talk about the ways we saw God carry our family through this last year. Our kids shared that their hardest moments were when I lost my hair and seeing Mommy having to go in for medicine so many times. We also talked about how through this, we've learned as a family how to better trust God to take care of us and how Jesus has been our hope in the midst of these hard things.

The thing that stands out the most to me through this past year is God's faithfulness. Having a good outcome was never promised during this process.  But we trusted that through the unknown and through the journey, that God had good things in store for us- no matter the outcome. God's faithfulness was knowing that in both the scariest moments and celebratory times that He was with us and in control. I think of some of the hard decisions we had to make and the times I cried out to God for wisdom while standing out on the dock at Colby Lake.  There were times of wrestling through those decisions as they related to the long-term impact for me. And God was faithful to provide clarity, wisdom, and filled me with peace about every decision made.

Today I am about 5 months cancer free and doing well! Going forward, I will continue my hormone therapy medication for 5-10yrs to reduce my risk for recurrence of the second type that was found, as well as frequent checks with my oncologist to continue to be monitored.

We can't say this enough--THANK YOU for all your support for our family! We have been blessed beyond measure by everyone who has come around us and we thank God for all the kindness and love extended to our family.

Much love,

Team Dixon

PS- I've been jamming to this tune (linked above) all week and wanted to share with you all. "If I've got breath in my lungs, then you're not finished with me".  Amen!
