Irelyn’s Story

Site created on August 24, 2009

Little Irelyn and I were flown to Seattle after an ultrasound at 35 weeks gestation showed fluid build-up in her chest cavity.  She was delivered by emergency C-section after arriving at University of Washington Medical Center on Friday August 21 at 3:00 am.  Irelyn weighed 6 lbs 9 oz and was about 18 in. long.
Irelyn was immediately put on a ventilator and two chest tubes were inserted to drain the fluid.  After 1 day at the U of W Medical Center she was given 0% chance of survival if not transferred to Seattle Children's Hospital in order to be put on a life-saving machine called ECMO. Irelyn was on the heart/lung bypass machine for 10 days.  This machine did the work of her lungs so that her lungs could rest, heal, and mature.  We are so incredibly fortunate to have had access to this machine, this facility, and the amazing people that are taking care of her.

Journal entry by Erin Beaudette

A lot of you already know my story. My story did not just end. I am currently a happy, healthy, 14 year old. I love to read, write and do any art project. I am also trying to get a little bit stronger both mentally and physically in 2024. I will be visiting Seattle this summer. I am very exited about that. I have always held a special place in my heart for Seattle and more importantly Seattle Children's Hospital. I will also be taking a school trip to Washington DC and New York.  I would like to earn some money this year. I will use the money that I earn to create a gift box to send to the NICU for Christmas.
