Ida’s Story

Site created on August 16, 2023

Welcome to Ida's CaringBridge site. It has been created to keep friends and family updated. Ida and her family appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time. Last Saturday, August 12, Ida awoke in the night, feeling "off." A subsequent fall in her bedroom led to a series of bodily responses that  cued her into the fact that this time, she was going to have to wave the white flag.  In true "Ida fashion," she made it down the stairs, but not easily. The eventual result of her experience was an inability to walk or to speak clearly, and this caused a couple of bad falls as she tried to hoist herself with the assistance of the counter top.  Miraculously, she was able to maneuver herself to unlock the front door and toward the phone that God placed just within her reach. After placing a couple of desperate phone calls, she prayed and waited. A couple of dear friends appeared and the ambulance arrived to transport her to the emergency room in Williston. There, it was determined that she was most likely having a stroke, but the staff decided not to give her "clot busters" as it could be detrimental in her case. Since Williston no longer has a life flight from the hospital, Mom waited while a plane was summoned from Dickinson. Late in the morning, she was airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Bismarck where it was determined that she had suffered a stroke.  The first couple of days were filled with tests and evaluations to determine the extent of Ida's condition. The brain MRI showed that she had suffered a stroke in the right side of her brain, resulting in left side numbness and lack of movement from head to toe. X-rays show that Mom has a fractured lower fibula, also, as a result of one of the falls she took. She has much deep bruising on the left side of her body, but, thankfully, no other broken bones. She is able to fully recall the details of everything that happened, and it seems that her ability to speak and think has not been compromised! For anyone who knows Ida, you know she is a warrior in mind, body, and spirit. Please offer prayers for her healing as she navigates this journey.

Journal entry by Angela Ourth

The silver lining of having such an early Christmas break at school is I was able to get to North Dakota and see Ida for a couple days!
She is settled in at my sister’s house and is as well as can be - all things considered. It was amazing to see the progress (although too slow in her eyes), that’s been made since I saw her in October. The boot is off, and she is semi-mobile with a walker.
There continues to be no feeling on the left side, which when coupled with her vision impairment doubles the challenge. If you know Ida, though, you know she’s going to just keep fighting.
Our family is so blessed to have had Marie supporting and caring for Ida while the rest of us live much further away, and knowing Ida is being cared for by some of the best hands possible makes for the lightening of a lot of worry.
Thank you all for YOUR continued love and support, and keep the prayers for healing and mobility coming!

Although the attached quote is in regard to Our Blessed Mother’s “Yes!” to God, I read Ida’s situation into it, and it truly encompasses how Ida has ALWAYS lived her life. So many lessons to live and learn, and Ida will take each day as it comes - “I am getting better every day,” she said.
