Newest Update

Journal entry by Elizabeth Hyttsten

So, I thought I updated around Ian's 2nd Birthday, guess I was wrong. Oops. Mom brain. Guess I'll be recapping since end of October.

So October was how long ago? 3ish months. We all got flu shots over MEA. Ian got an ear infection in one ear and when we went in for the recheck at Halloween, the infection was in the other ear. The older two had a blast trick or treating in their costumes from last year, I made them big last year so they fit again this year; so we had another horse and unicorn. Ian stayed home with me and emptied the candy bowl all over the floor, a couple of times.

November brought Ian's 2nd birthday. We celebrated with cake and ice cream on a Sunday afternoon. This time Jackson ended up with an ear infection right before Thanksgiving. It was a busy week as Aaron worked this year and we decided to host his family for the holiday. It was a little packed in our small house but we made it work.

First week in December we went up and saw Bentleyville up in Duluth. We were very fortunate to have such nice weather that weekend where is wasn't so cold. My parents and sisters went up the weekend too so we were able to spend some time with them there. They did Bentleyville Saturday night and we went Sunday night, being the kids don't have school Monday morning. Honestly, Sunday is the night to go because it calms down a lot with people getting ready for school and work on Monday. The week before Christmas I brought Ian into urgent care again and we were on the verge of another ear infection, this time a double one.  So we left with antibiotics and a suggestion to see an ENT for tubes. I emailed the cardiologist and he sent a referral to the ENT at Children's, we have that appointment at the end of January.

Christmas was busy, it was three days of travel around seeing family. It was nice to finally be home for a few days. The weather was much more cooperative this year than last year, although fog was not my idea of a white Christmas. It was nice to see everyone and play some games. New Years was spent at home with everyone being in bed before the ball dropped.

January has already been busy. We are working on getting an nurse come in a couple times a week to be with Ian so I can have some respite and get some me time. It's a work in progress. Ian ended up with croup over the weekend and only wanted mommy and to change the show on the tv every 30 seconds. By the end of Monday, Ian was back to himself.

The biggest change this month is that Ian now has OT twice a week and PT once, they are also no longer joint sessions. On OT appointment will be to work on constraint therapy. They have casted his right arm an inch below his arm pit down to his finger tips so he can't really use his right arm at all and is forced to use his left more. The first 24 hours have been interesting. We cried the whole way home from Willmar (10-15min) because he wouldn't take his hat off his face with his left hand and mommy refused to pull over. Ian feels that using his feet is more useful than his left hand at times. Supper was a blast when we discovered that banging the cast on the table was extremely fun and that it makes a great broom for sweeping stuff off the table. Last night was tough, he couldn't really sleep like he usually does with the cast hindering his arm.  So laying on mommy was the answer and waking up every few minutes before we finally fell into a deep sleep.  He will remained casted for about a week, then we will remove it the night before his OT appointment and give him a good bath. At the appointment we will decide if we cast again for another week or give him a break for a week before recasting.

So overall, not much has happened. We have ENT at the end of the month, Cardiology in February, and a follow up eye appointment when I remember to make the appointment. Guess time will tell where life leads us. Right now we are in a good place hearth wise and overall health wise as a family. Other than the occasional cold with runny noses. On a side note, the kids are happy to finally have snow to play in.
