Hunter’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Where to start?  How to keep it simple?
We are at Aurora St. Luke’s Milwaukee with Hunter.

Long story short:

Hunter had a routine dental cleaning 8/19 which lead to ENDOCARDITIS and SEPSIS due to Streptococcus agalactiae GBS (group B Strep) in his blood. He needs Open Heart Surgery to replace his Mitral Valve and has had septic emboli break off and go to his right kidney as well as many places in his brain.  So that means he had a STROKE. The biggest hit was to the area that controls vision in his right eye. He noticed a blind spot on Friday coming back from an MRI. He said it’s like a screen over the right peripheral vision.

BRIGHT SIDE:  Hunter was sick with headache and FEVER since Sunday 8/28 but felt well enough to move back to MSOE in Milwaukee on Labor Day. When the shaking, fever and chills returned. We looked for an Emergency Department that takes our insurance. God guided us to THE HEART hospital here at St. Luke’s.

Journal entry by Cara Thelen

Monday, January 2, 2023 Hunter texted Coach to ask if he was running on Saturday in Chicago.  Coach replied: “My plan was to have you anchor the 4X 400, if you would have asked me in October I would have said, no.  This will allow you to get back into racing with limited pressure.  If you begin to feel like crap you can slow down.  If you don’t want to race yet, I understand that also.”  Hunter, of course, accepted the invitation and challenge.
Hunter’s A-team took second place MSOE-B team beat him by 1 stride.  56 seconds. 2.5 seconds faster than he’s run this year. (Track season) See pictures.
He was very emotional afterwards!! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!!
He REALLY thought he’d never be competitive again!!  And here he is MEET #1 holding on to first place until the very last fraction of a second!!!  WOW!! God!!
