Journal entry by Kara Hartman

This past Thursday, Hadlie had to go get blood drawn locally to check hemoglobin levels before the weekend. My grandma took her since she was already watching her that day and it would be silly to take just 1 hour off work. Hadlie wasn't too excited about another poke, but I think she did alright. Labs got sent to Nationwide, and they called to say her levels were okay and she didn't need further intervention at this time...I think it was around 8.1 maybe (they typically give blood if around or below 7.5).
Fast forward to Sunday.. Hadlie has been lethargic- randomly curling up and laying her head down on the couch, not her usual energy level.
Monday morning (today) was rough. I am not feeling well (sinus stuff going on), which was bad last night, okay when I woke up this morning, then got progressively worse as the day went on. Hadlie cried about everything and was super emotional. Quieter than usual in the van on the way to Columbus. After accessing her port (which she did really well for) and drawing labs, we found out her hemoglobin is now 5.4! 😲 So that might explain the irritability, lethargy, etc. Her weight has been maintained, so nothing different for that. She will be getting a blood transfusion today. The chemo was ready really fast (or at least it seemed like it compared to other appt days). She only got Vincristine, so it was done by 11:15. They then moved us to the infusion side of the hematology floor (with an actual bed, comfy chair, and tv thats works) thankfully. We watched the entire "Little Mermaid" movie and more before the blood was even ready. The nurse said they found antibodies, so it was maybe taking longer to figure out what those were. She picked out a toy for Wrenzlie and chose some play-doh to play with. She ordered cereal for lunch, which also came before the blood was even ready. The antibody must've been a cold antigen, because the blood had to be warmed again. They finally started the transfusion around 2:25. That ran for a little over 2 hours. I convinced her to lay down around 3 because she still han't taken a nap today yet. Within 5 minutes of the Mario movie, she was out, and she slept for maybe 40 minutes. Her and Wrenzlie were both out at the same time, thank goodness! By 4:45, she got de-accessed and discharged to leave. With two stops on the way home to feed Wrenzlie, then to get gas, we made it home around 7 🥱. Taking care of these kidddos is way more work than actually going to work! Especially trying to do it while being sick. But I love them and love doing it! 🥰
Before knowing Hadlie would need blood, I had told her we could maybe stop at a playground on the way home (thinking we would be leaving Nationwide around noon.) Since that didn't happen, I had Chris take her to a playground for a bit in the evening while the other two kiddos got ready for and went to bed.
The nurse practicioner said this blood will only be good for her for about 4 days, so she wants her to get labs again locally on Thursday to see if her hemoglobin is continuing to drop. Not sure how they can know if its "dropping" though if blood was just given and her levels weren't checked right after 🤔 It could be "low", but still rising rather than declining I'd think 🤷‍♀️ Who knows, but let's pray we don't need to come back again Friday for blood. 🙏
She had fun at the playground and by then was in a slap-happy mood. She ate a good dinner and went to bed later than usual, but gets to sleep in tomorrow. 👍
