Huck’s Story

Site created on August 18, 2020

Huck (14 months old) has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We'll update as needed to keep you, our friends and family, in-the-know.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Rachel Capistrant

It’s been almost a year since our last post! So much has happened and yet, at the same time, not a ton has changed. Our tiny T1D warrior is now 3.5 years old and rocking his threenager attitude. He’s hilarious - probably the funniest person in our family. He’s also a great dancer and rocks a fun T-Rex impression. We’re so grateful for him.

I can't reflect back on these past few years without acknowledging the medical care we've been so fortunate to receive. We’re forever indebted to the healthcare professionals who cared for Huck (and for us) that August evening in 2020 (and beyond): The Express Care doc who sent us to the ER for more testing; the ER doctor who checked his blood sugar after a series of other tests; the nurse who pulled me aside and reassured me that his friend’s child has T1D and is thriving; the Life Link paramedics who flew Huck and me to Children’s; the ER doc who met us at 2 a.m. awake and on his “A Game;” the nurse who took her time explaining everything to me even though I’m fairly certain I understood 4% of her words behind her mask and my brain fog; Nurse Philip who requested to care for our family because he had an interest in T1D education; an incredible P.A. (she looked exactly like Wonder Woman) who Zoomed with us weekly to answer our 10,000,000 [mostly stupid] questions and tell us about her new puppy; a support system of family and friends willing to talk about insulin for the millionth time because it’s all my brain was capable of discussing.

It’s been a quick year since our last post. It’s been filled with pump site changes every 2-3 days, weekly sensor changes, monthly insurance phone calls, chats with durable medical equipment suppliers, nightly wake-ups because of low or high blood sugars, and the ever elusive tasks of dosing for a donut.

Though Huck’s blood sugar numbers will never simply even out, he’s going to live a ridiculously full life. We will not let T1D be Huck’s only identity. He’s sassy, witty, creative, weird and so much more. He’s a fighter, and he’s stronger than I ever knew a 3 year old could be (he likes to show us his Hulk muscles daily to prove it). What other 3 year old can do a hospital blood draw without flinching?! He’s our Incredible Huck.

We had grand plans to participate in the JDRF fundraising walk again this spring, but we have a dance recital on that very same day. We’ve decided to do our own little walk, and we encourage you to do the same. As part of our fundraiser, our plan was to have our group wear t-shirts supporting our Incredible Huck. They can still be purchased for fun (click here to check them out - seriously, they're really cute), but we won’t be doing a big group photo at the walk.

We have so much to be grateful for. Access to healthcare, time and energy to put into phone calls and appointments, our 4 other compassionate kiddos who are carb counting pros, and our community of friends and family (you!) that continues to support and love us, even though we haven’t slept through the night in about 2.5 years and can no longer form intelligent thoughts. We love you. We’re thankful for you.

Here's Huck's 2023 JDRF fundraising page (click here). Please don't feel obligated to donate, but do check out the cover pic of mom smooshing Huck's sweet cheek.
