Howard’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

In late March, almost overnight Howard experienced extreme pain in all joints. He was initially diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and chronic kidney disease. He’s been on and off different medications since then trying to figure things out.

In September, Howard’s energy level was steadily decreasing. He was tired all of the time. Losing weight and having no energy sent them to multiple doctors. Fast forward to January and he met with a blood doctor. Howard’s blood tests were off and so he got a bone marrow biopsy and PET scan.

Finally, on Monday, January 18th, he got a diagnosis of Mantle Cell Lymphoma. As devastating as a cancer diagnoses was, it gave us HOPE since we now knew what we were dealing with. And we also had a PLAN.

Having to deal with all insurance and pharmacy and medication implications of this protocol made it that Howard was not able to schedule the appointment to begin treatment until late in the week, and the appointment itself was scheduled for January 27th.

On Saturday, January 23rd, Howard was having an exceptionally tough day. Knowing that the cancer was raging in his body, Rosalee finally asked if he needed to go to the hospital. He told her to call an ambulance.

At the Windom ER, they determined that Howard needed “emergency” spleen surgery. Because of the snowy weather, they could not airlift him directly from Windom to Sioux Falls for the surgery. When he left Windom, Rosalee gave Howard a hug and Howard told her to send the ambulance crew a thank you note. Howard’s travel took longer than expected but by very early Sunday morning Howard was in the hospital in Sioux Falls and Rosalee was able to talk to Howard on the phone.

Upon Howard’s arrival at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, the doctors on-call decided not to do the surgery. This was because if they went ahead with the surgery, then the chemotherapy treatments would not be able to begin for at least 4-6 weeks. Sunday (Jan. 24) was excruciatingly long as we didn’t have any answers and no doctor’s advice until Monday. His vitals were stable, however, so as emotionally rough we were, the medical staff seemed a little calmer.

On Monday, January 25th, it was decided to start the lymphoma regimen as soon as possible. We were hoping to get it started Tuesday, January 26th.  That didn't happen, but we are praying to get it started today (Wednesday, January 27th).

Howard is so incredibly tired. His doctor is cautiously optimistic. All prayers are welcomed! We hope in the near future to give you positive updates.

Obituary:

Howard Charles Davis, also known as, Howie, was born June 26, 1943 to the late William Arthur and Phyllis Nellie (Inman) Davis in Holt, MN.  He had two sisters, Lavonne and Deanna, and one brother, Conley.  Howard was baptized on July 19, 1944 and later confirmed on June 1, 1958 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt.  Howard attended Holt Consolidated School and Newfolden Community School, participating in football, basketball and student government, graduating with the Class of 1961.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1965 from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, majoring in mathematics and physics.  In 1970, he earned a master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance from Mankato State University.

Howard was united in marriage to Rosalee Margaret Fox on July 30, 1966 at Sharon Lutheran Church in Lamberton, MN.  The marriage was blessed with three children, Eric, Scott and Lisa.  After teaching in Tracy from 1965-1969, Howard began working at Windom Public Schools in a counseling position and continued until his retirement in 1999.  He was active in the Windom Education Association, serving in various positions, including president. In 1982-83, he was chosen Windom Teacher of the Year and in 1993 was named Southwest MN Counselor of the Year and MN High School Counselor of the Year.  Howard was instrumental in starting the Knowledge Bowl program and Dollars for Scholars for Windom students.  He also served as Student Council advisor and National Honor Society advisor.  He was active in the Cottonwood County Youth Task Force.  Howie retired in 1999, but after one week of retirement, he realized he needed something more, so he continued working as a substitute teacher and Guardian ad litem.  Howard passed away on February 4, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Society in Windom, where he resided for two days.

Howard attended most of the grandchildren’s athletic events and school performances.  He enjoyed playing cards, going to high school sporting events, woodworking, reading and spending time with his family.

Howard had a lifetime appointment as a Remick trustee and has served on the board since the death of Mr. Remick.  He worked with the City of Windom, Cottonwood County and Windom School District to find ways that the Remick Foundation could positively impact the community.  Howard contributed greatly through his service with the Foundation, discovering the needs of the community and seeking ways to improve the lives of children, with special concern for the disadvantaged.  He also served as a member of ROMEO friends.

Howie was an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom.  He served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, President and Vice President of the Congregation, Trust Fund Board, and Personnel Committee. He also worked closely with Dave Vaupel making prayer candle tables, hymnal boards, crosses and holding crosses.

Howard is survived by his wife, Rosalee, three children, Eric (Michele) Davis of Charlotte, NC; Scott (Anna) Davis of Minneapolis, MN; and Lisa (Tim) Young of Jordan, MN; nine grandchildren, Cameron and Erica Rose Davis; Grace, Ellen and Paul Davis; Isaac, Seth, Sarah and Levi Young; and one sister, Deanna (Ed) Lallum of Phoenix, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William (1966) and Phyllis Davis Maijala (2012); one brother, Conley Davis (2013); and one sister, Lavonne Blair (1995).

Blessed be the memory of Howard Charles Davis
