Howard’s Story

Site created on September 20, 2021

Some of you may wonder, because of Howard’s symptoms, if he is being treated for Covid. He is not. He was originally being treated for aspirational pneumonia, which developed when he inhaled some food particles into his esophagus. These particles were removed with an endoscope. Some days later he developed a cough and severe pain on his right side. After many chest x-rays and CT scans and 2 rounds of antibiotics for the pneumonia found in his right lung, he was feeling worse rather than showing any improvement. X-rays showed increased pneumonia as well as rapidly increasing fluid (infection) around his right lung. Doctors suspect some food particles were inhaled into his lung, either before or during the endoscopy. Since then his condition has deteriorated with the infection proving very resistant to treatment. Although he is in critical condition we are assured every day that there is hope and he can pull through this.

So many of you have commented on Howie’s big personality and strong spirit. We agree wholeheartedly and pray that will be what pulls him through this crisis. We love you all and your words of encouragement mean so much to our family.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jane Bicker

Howie is home! After seven weeks in the hospital and TCU, we are thrilled to have him back at home. It has been a long and agonizing journey for Howie and our whole family. He made tremendous progress during the time he spent at New Harmony. He went from taking a few steps with a walker to cruising at a good clip with his cane. He is already sleeping better, last night he slept for 12 hours uninterrupted by bloodwork or checks on his vitals. This morning we spent a couple of hours with an intake nurse from Lifesprk Homecare. He will initially have nursing, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. We don’t anticipate that he will need this service for more than a couple of weeks. He will continue to have dialysis for as long as his kidneys need it.  He (and I) are also learning about dietary restrictions and which foods and drinks are beneficial for his kidneys to recover. It is definitely a change in lifestyle and a learning experience. We still need prayers for the kidneys but we are hopeful, since his kidneys functioned normally before he became ill.
Our three daughters and four youngest grandchildren gathered tonight to celebrate his homecoming. The kids were so happy to see grandpa again! This will probably be my last update for a while, since our main goal was achieved by bringing him home to continue his recovery. Thanks to everyone for caring, praying and following his progress. It has been a godsend for all of us.
