Hope is the thing with feathers  by Emily Dickenson

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the Gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land;

And on the strangest Sea,

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Journal entry by Paula Barfield Unger

Hello Beautiful People,

I have a new name--NED--no evidence of disease. I am overjoyed! At this point, chemo has ended and no other treatments are needed. My CT scan revealed one area in the upper abdomen that we're watching and will check for any changes with another CT in two months. It's probably (hopefully!)  a result of the surgery and nothing more. I am doing my best to relish in the good news but also live realistically. The next two years will probably be a lot of this sort of vigilance, and I want to stay motivated to take the news as it comes without jumping to the worst conclusion possible. Right now, the treatments ending because of NED is where I am holding my gaze.

You know what this means? My hair is growing back! It's just a little fuzz at this point, but every week brings more. And yes, we're keeping a photo diary to convince me that change is actually happening. Thank you, Michael! Hello eyebrows! Hello eyelashes! I'm so happy to see you.

A sweet friend and her daughter are calling this the year of healing. I am fully on board and moving forward with hopeful strength and giggly optimism. I am so grateful to be in this place. Thank you for your encouragement and support. It helps me in so many ways.

with infinite love and abundant grace,

Paula (aka NED)
