Holly’s Story

Site created on June 6, 2023

Holly had surgery on 06/01/23 to remove a large lump on her thyroid that started to press on her windpipe. On 06/05/23 we received a call from the surgeon at Children’s Minneapolis about Holly’s pathology report from the lump that was removed.

We were informed it is a Follicular Variant papillary type thyroid cancer. Originally they thought it was benign (not cancerous) but that was unfortunately not the case. They are hoping it hasn’t spread but we won’t know until after her second surgery. This type is a more aggressive form of cancer and they will need to remove the rest of her thyroid (the left side) and will also do a central neck dissection in a second surgery. This will remove some of the lymph nodes also in her neck. They may also do radioactive iodine treatment in addition to the surgery.

We will post updates on here in regards to Holly’s Journey.

Journal entry by Amy Boyd

Holly had her ultrasound and endocrinologist appointment this morning. Everything looked good and her labs were good. She is in remission!!! This means that the signs and symptoms of her cancer are reduced. He explained that  she still has microscopic spots in her lungs. The spots in the lungs do not usually respond to the radioactive iodine and usually don’t grow and they tend to just stay put and not do anything and because of that she will always have thyroid cancer for the rest of her life. So unfortunately it will be a lifelong condition for her and she will not ever truly be cancer free. However, he said that he expects her to still be able to live a long full life. This will just be a lifelong journey for her.

He is having us sent to a genetist to have a genetics test done to look for anything that could possibly come up that we should be mindful of going forward with her.  They will call us and we will set up an appointment with them at that time. We will go back in 4 months for labs, ultrasound and an appointment. So while it’s good news that she is in remission it is also sad to know she will never be truly cancer free. Holly of course has been very positive and as we all know she isn’t gonna let anything get in her way.

Holly started playing goalie for her U15 team 2 months ago. She has done amazing in the last 2 months and  come along way in a short time. She was even awarded player of the game at a tournament in Brookings, SD in January. She has expressed her desire to continue as a goalie for the next season.

Holly will be playing AAA hockey for the Queens again as a defender starting next month. She will also play for the Fury for fastpitch again starting in the spring.
