Hershel’s Story

Site created on July 24, 2023

Thank you for visiting Hershel's CaringBridge site. Ann and her family are so grateful for your prayers, love, and support during this difficult journey. They are deeply touched by the tremendous outpouring of care and concern that they have experienced over the last week from co-workers, family, and friends. As much as Ann and her family would love to connect with everyone individually, addressing Hershel's medical needs, and the many other issues that come up daily, requires a great deal of time, energy, and focus. They are hopeful that this CaringBridge site will enable them to communicate with family and friends more consistently and effectively.

Last Monday, July 17th, Hershel had a hemorrhagic stroke in the left occipital region of his brain and was admitted to Medical City of Plano for treatment. Hershel has been in critical condition in the ICU and has undergone several procedures to address the hemorrhage, all of which have been successful thus far. He also developed a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) in his lung resulting from several days of being intubated and on a ventilator. The doctors have continued to treat this issue and are observing improvements.  As of Monday, 7/24, Hershel has been able to answer question via head movement and appears to have retained full motor function in this limbs.

Many of you have asked how you can help. Most importantly, please pray for Hershel and the Malett family; this is the greatest gift you can give them.   Because they are spending most of their time at the hospital, gift cards for restaurants like Chick-Fil-A are helpful and appreciated. You can also Venmo Ann directly at @Ann-Malett.  Thank you for your prayers and love for Hershel and the family; your support means the world to the Maletts and gives them strength to believe, hope, and persevere as they look to God daily for grace and wisdom.

Ann and her family look forward to reading any comments you leave on this site and will be checking it regularly.

Ann has great news to share today--Hershel is scheduled to be released from the rehab hospital FRIDAY--Praise God!!!!! After 10 weeks in the hospital, Ann and Hershel are beyond thrilled to go home! 🙌

Hershel is doing so well in many areas especially with walking and physical things. They are also grateful that Hershel was accepted into the Day Neuro program at the Frisco rehab hospital, meaning he qualified for the program and their insurance approved it! This is a HUGE ANSWERED PRAYER!!!! He will start the Day Neuro program on Monday the 18th. The program is M-F from 9-3; they anticipate that he will have this intense cognitive therapy for at least 8-12 weeks. Having access to this program is an incredible blessing and will facilitate and accelerate Hershel's progress and healing.

Apparently, discouragement and depression can be a significant challenge for patients after a stroke.  Please pray for continued grace, peace, healing, and strength for Hershel with his situation.  Relearning fundamental skills, cognitively and physically, can be tremendously discouraging and requires a great deal of mental, physical, and spiritual fortitude. The great news is that Hershel has made incredible, remarkable strides, and the hospital is hopeful that he will regain the cognitive functions that were affected by the stroke through the Neuro program.

Ann & Hershel are very excited about going home on Friday, but the road ahead will be challenging and difficult. Your prayers and love continue to be a priceless blessing to them and give them hope to persevere and trust in God's goodness and faithfulness every step of the journey. Thank you again--words cannot convey the heart-felt gratitude and love they feel for your support and kindness!
