Heidi’s Story

Site created on September 8, 2019

Heidi was in a horrible motorcycle accident on Labor Day, September 2, in West Des Moines. This accident also resulted in the loss of Mark, a very dear person to her. She’s very fortunate to be alive and will have a lengthy recovery. I've started this page in order to update the tremendous community of friends and family that she has. My sister is well-loved and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the love and support that is being shown to Heidi and our entire family. We all love her and know she’ll get through this. 💕

Newest Update

Journal entry by Holly Sorge

It's already been a year! As the anniversary of Heidi's accident passed a few days ago, I asked her to provide me with an update which I'll do my best to summarize below. I also received a couple of photos of her which I've posted.

Heidi had a doctor's appointment on Friday with pain management. She is dealing with some pain due to neuromas (as a result of the amputation) and she still has a portion of the leg that is still healing at the wound. She is on her second prosthetic and within a few months, the third will be made. Her leg is still shrinking a bit but is very close to its permanent size. The nerve pain continues to be the biggest struggle but the doctor believes she's healing well and is very happy with her progress. They continue to adjust medications to help alleviate the pain. Heidi also had surgery back in March to repair a toe that was broken in the accident and never healed. It was fused together and has healed successfully. She continues to struggle with short term memory loss, but she realizes it could be at least 2 years for her brain to heal completely.

Heidi is working full-time at the local school and continues to volunteer for the Iowa Honey Producers. The kids are back to school and doing well. She misses Mark a lot and that won't change. It's day by day but she takes comfort in knowing she'll see him again someday.

Heidi's friends will be coming to her house soon to remove the ramp they had built for her wheelchair. She is now able to maneuver steps, so the ramp is no longer needed. She's very fortunate she's had such good friends help her out with the endless amount of work around her home.

It's certainly been a year of challenges, but things are and will continue to get better. Heidi would like to thank you all for the continued prayers and support you have given her over the last year! She wouldn't be where she is now without the help from all of you!
