Newest Update

Journal entry by camille mathis

We apologize for the delay in updates, their have been so many major changes happening it’s been hard to keep up with.  Things are changing not just by the day, but by the hour!

Hayden’s trauma team has officially signed off on him, meaning he is under the care of general doctors now.  This is great news and really shows just how well he has healed in 3 short weeks.  He has been working hard and it’s showing!

Hayden’s hemoglobin level continues to improve daily.  This is great news as his body has been rapidly healing.  The more he heals, the better and better he does at his physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.  He is doing so well with his speech therapy they have cut the time in half each week, and given him more time for occupational therapy and physical therapy.

While working his tail off at therapy, the gains have been nothing short of amazing!  Massive increases!  For instance when we got to Rehab ten days ago he could walk 8ft, and then 300ft three days later, and today he walked 800 ft!  His gains have been this big in all therapy categories.  He has been practicing stairs, getting in and out of vehicles, peddling on a bike, walking, getting dressed, standard hygiene of brushing teeth deoderant etc,  and has passed all day to day activities.  Being in a neck brace and having a cast on his arm, this is extremely hard but he has found a way to comfortably do it all!

Saturday, Hayden got to meet the first responders from Lincoln County Sheriffs and the Harrisburg Fire Department who arrived to the accident scene.  This was great for everyone!  Hayden, Tate, and I got the opportunity to personally thank them all, and the first responders got to see how well Hayden was doing, and how positive he is.  They even brought turkeys and hams for both Tate and I, as well as Austin’s family.  What an awesome gesture, and we cannot thank them enough.   Several people played a crucial role in saving Hayden’s life, and we plan to thank every one of them.

Hayden will hopefully be getting part of his stitches out of his head this week, and some more X-Rays of his arm.  This is perfect timing, because right after we were told this, his doctor and case worker came into the room and said they had some exciting News…

Hayden was originally set to be discharged from the hospital on December 10th, however with how well he is progressing, they were going to be moving that date up… Substantially moving the date up.  Dr. Madson told us as long as nothing changes in the next couple days, Hayden would be discharged from the hospital THIS Wednesday or Friday, depending how the next two days go!  20 days ahead of schedule!  This is absolutely amazing news. The doctors said he has passed every test to be able to go home and come back daily for therapy.  Being able to go to our home is an absolute blessing.  We are beyond grateful for the news, the therapists working so hard with Hayden, and most of all for Hayden pushing himself to get to this point!  We will still be going to therapy daily, but we will be able to go home each night and spend it as a family.

Whether we go home Wednesday or Friday, We will be spending Thanksgiving at Sanford with Austin and his family.  We have a full Thanksgiving meal planned and wouldn’t want to spend it with anyone else. The Hilbrands' have become family to us, and we look forward to spending the Holiday with them.

We want everyone to know how thankful we continue to be for the outpouring of love and support.  We have the best of friends and family, who have loved us and prayed so hard for our family and our son, and for Austin and his family.  You all have helped make the unimaginable, manageable.  We are and will be forever grateful to you all.  Please continue to pray for Hayden and Austin as they continue the road to recovery.

Love to all,
Tate and Cami
