Harper’s Story

Site created on July 19, 2023

On Tuesday, July 18th Harper was involved in a serious bike accident as he was coming down Baker Hill on Bainbridge Island. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, and is receiving amazing care. Our hope is that this website can keep everyone who loves him updated, and be made aware of the many ways that we can be in his corner during this difficult time.

Journal entry by Laura OConnell

It's hard to believe that Harper has now been home for 2 weeks!  While it's been so lovely to be home, it continues to be an exhausting and intense time.  Harper is continuing to heal well, and will be going back into Children's for several big appointment over the next few weeks.  He's really hoping an x-ray of his heel on Aug 30th will allow him to start some weight bearing.  He'll also have more testing to evaluate his TBI, which will give them a good idea of what he'll be able to handle academically when school starts.  It's been rough to be limited to a wheelchair (especially this time of year), on top of very limited screen time - but he's been filling his time with LOTS of board games with friends and family, and even got out to a movie with some friends.

As a mom, watching their transition home has reminded me a lot of coming home with a newborn.  Being so grateful for life, but going from an entire hospital team managing care, to managing it completely on your own.  On top of that, your emotions and body have been through a lot, and there is a lot to process.

They have been so appreciative of all of the meals, and continued offers for help.  They would definitely appreciate prayers for continued healing, strength, and grace for all the things.  This community has blown them away, and they can't imagine how they would have gotten through without all of the support.

Some of you are asking if there are any ways we can continue to help.  A few of us were just realizing how amazing an insta-cart  gift card could be - it would give them the ability to order groceries (these errands are tricky right now), or take out as needed.  If you'd like to be part of this gift, shoot me an email at oconnells1908@yahoo.com, and I'll give you the details.

Thanks for continuing to support this sweet family.
