A quick review: On this date a year ago I was laid low by a nasty ischemic stroke deep in my brain stem. I've spent the past year surviving with a post-stroke condition called Lateral Medullary Syndrome (aka Wallenberg Syndrome). It's been a haul, to say the least. But as they like to say here in MN: 'could be worse.
My first thoughts on this Strokiversary are thoughts of gratitude. I'm exceedingly thankful for all of the expressions of care, concern, and encouragement that so many have shown us over the past twelve months. It's too bad it took a health emergency to make me truly appreciate our truly grand network of support.
Presently, I'm fully vaccinated and back teaching at Augsburg University. I get around pretty good with the use of a cane and it seems I get a little better at balance and mobility with each passing week. Nerve pain on the left side of my face and fatigue are constantly in need of management but, again, 'could be worse.
I'm not sure where I would be without Kristin, my kids, extended family, friends near and far, colleagues, a fulfilling job to come back to, doctors, RNs, therapists, a good health plan, a brain that knows how to reroute neural networks, and a gracious Lord who blesses and keeps me.
Grace, peace, and love for now!
Hans
