Newest Update

Journal entry by Courtney Christians-Neethling

It has been quit awhile since I have made any updates on Hannes.
It’s been a whirlwind of doctors appointments, therapy appointments and health issues with our kiddos.
So first off, Hannes had his appointment with the neurologist in Fargo October 20th.
He of course told Hannes he was an interesting case. But was pretty sure we would get the answers we needed at his nerve testing.
Hannes had nerve testing November 9th. The news was not what we wanted to hear. Good news: his right arm is healing. The doctor could hear and see the nerves firing. So so slowly but surely it will get better. Now the bad news. He has severe nerve damage on his left side. The doctor could not hear or see any nerve function. He had to get all the way up to Hannes’s neck before he got any sort of nerve action.  This is not good. The doctor also stated that he was very worried. We have Hannes’s check ups with the Burn Surgeon and the Specialty Dept Dec 1st. Then we see the neurologist in Fargo Dec 21st. Hopefully we will get answers then on what the next steps are.
Hannes’s compression garments arrived last week on Wednesday. The first day he said it felt good. Second day he was a little achy. Third day it hurt. Which they said it would be painful because it’s trying to reign in the healing skin to lessen the scar tissue. By Saturday night he was in so much pain, no pain medicine was working and everything we tried made it worse. A breeze would make him yell in pain. He broke down and agreed to go to the ER. If you know Hannes, he is in some major pain if he is willing to go to the ER. He had to stay the night to be able to get the pain under control. He was hurting so bad he just wanted to die. Was awful.
By about 4am Sunday morning he was able to finally get some sleep. I picked him up and was able to bring him home around 11. He slept most of the day. Finally was feeling normal.
Seen our primary today and she spoke to Hennepin Burn Surgeon. Said to slowly work way up to wearing compression to full time but it’s not supposed to hurt. See our person who measured him and see what she says. Make sure everything is the way it’s supposed to be. And they will see us the 1st.
So it’s been crazy.
Now we are on our way to Texas for Thanksgiving so hopefully this goes well.
So that’s where we are right now. Thank you for all the positive thoughts and prayers.
He has a long road ahead of him.
