Hannah’s Story

Site created on August 3, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place as Hannah journeys through stage four cancer. If you know her, you love her. She’s the fiercest Taco Bell loving, puppy snuggling, fist grade teacher we know. Hannah is a loyal friend, a hilarious family member, a pseudo chicken farmer, and she has always been a fighter.

In mid-July 2021 Hannah developed severe pain her her back. It was originally believed to be muscle pain or recurring kidney stones. As her doctor hunted for issues with her kidneys, he discovered that Hannah had masses around her ovary and kidney. Later that day they discovered masses in the pelvis, soft tissue near the femur, and something inside the femur bone. Through testing with UCSF, Hannah's oncologists discovered masses on her spine and rib. She has been under the care of excellent oncologists, surgeons, nurses, you name it. They have been proactive and positive, and Hannah has continued to make them laugh with outrageous jokes and witty sarcasm. Since 2021, her team has treated Hannah with three types of chemotherapy, cellular therapy, radiation, and surgery.

Hannah has received overwhelming support (thank YOU). She loves her sweatsuits, gifts, dinners, and flowers. And, most importantly, our whole family has felt the peace of prayer and the strength of our community. We have needed you deeply. We appreciate your support and encouragement. Please sign up as a follower to keep receiving updates!

(And, just a reminder! Donating to CaringBridge via "Tributes" helps power the organization. We are grateful to anyone who helps this non-profit! Just know, the funds don't go to Hannah! Please see “Ways to Help” for her GoFundMe.)

Newest Update

Journal entry by Hannah Zarubin

Hello All,

Thank you so much for your kind messages.  I will do my best to respond to all of you, but I most likely wont. Just know I appreciate all of the kind words. (:

Tiny update. I went to the hospital on Friday to start chemo but was instead hospitalized. My numbers for my liver function tests and liver function panel were incredibly high and concerning. I am still at the hospital and most likely will be here until Wednesday. My doctors have been running a lot of test on my blood and I had an ultrasound of my liver done yesterday, the results of my ultrasound were normal. Tomorrow I will have a biopsy of my liver and hopefully a MRI. My doctors said we will know a lot more in the next 48 hours. We are trying to rule out my chemotherapy as the cause, since it is the best form of treatment for my cancer. Due to this unfortunate situation, chemo was obviously canceled and now radiation (I was due to start tomorrow) is being postponed. I will update you all when we know what is going on.

Xx Hannah
