Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Hey all! As you may or may not know our good friend Hailey Daenke fell and broke her ankle this past Friday. She had what I would call a successful ankle surgery on Saturday evening and went home as soon as her dad, Mic arrived in Tennessee from her home state of Nebraska on Sunday. By Tuesday morning her parents could tell something was off so they had her contact her doctor. In speaking with her doctor they insisted that she call an ambulance and get back to the hospital. Once at the hospital they determined Hailey had DKA which stands for Diabetic ketoacidosis. She was place in the ICU where she current still is.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Brooke Bly

Hello all,

I know I haven't updated for awhile, but I wanted to wait until there was something to update.

I had my 6-week follow up this morning and it went really, really well.  The doctor was very pleased with the progress of my ankle.  The swelling is almost gone, at least most of the time, and a good chunk of the bruising has gone away as well.  The bones are also healing well.  I think the doctor was surprised at how well he was healing, and I am okay with that.  🙂

I can finally start some weight bearing now; however, it will be about a month before I am able to completely walk in my walking boot.  Then, I will switch to a brace.  Hopefully in about 7 weeks I will be able to drive.  I'm honestly not sure if I'm more excited to walk or drive again.

I have been able to get out a little bit more now that I"m stronger and can hop up my front stairs a little better.  Today I went to Walmart early to return a few items I bought before I broke my ankle and I got to wheel around the store a bit.  Sad how excited (and exhausted) I was after that 20 min trip.

Since my ankle is progressing well, the doctor gave me the go ahead to travel.  Dad is ready to get back to Nebraska, so the plan now is to start back to The Good Life next Thursday.  We aren't sure if we can make it in two days or three.  It will all depend how I am feeling during the drive and how well the ankle holds up.  Right now it is twinging and I can feel half of my screws.  Healing is weird.

Once I get back, the plan is to be in Wayne thru the first week of March.  I have my last appointment with my ortho here on March 11, so we will head back before that.  I don't plan on doing much except teaching and working on some research, and hopefully getting down to Omaha to get the tattoo that I was scheduled to get over Christmas break.  You know, priorities.  I'd love visitors if anyone wants to make the trek up to Wayne.  Just let me know.

I want to say a final thank you to all of you who reached out, called, texted, or thought about me during all of this, as well as those who donated to the Go Fund me.  I think I have all of the bills, so now I get to start paying on them.  My own little financial reminder of my clumsiness.  Ha.  Your thoughts and generosity are appreciated more than you could possibly know.
