Gwen’s Story

Site created on December 9, 2023

Gwen was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cholangitis about six years ago. This is an autoimmune disease that attacks the bile ducts of the liver. As the disease has progressed she has been waiting to be placed on the Baylor Dallas liver transplant list. Since her liver cirrhosis has worsened she developed liver cancer due to poor liver health. Thankfully, doctors were able to perform a chemo embolization putting her liver cancer into remission!

This year mom was finally able to be added to the liver transplant list. Unfortunately, mom has had a set back in health that led to her status being paused on the transplant list. Our goal for the past few months has been to get her as strong as possible so she can be active on the transplant list again. Mom was days away from being on the list when she had an infection that landed her in the hospital for three weeks fighting infection, RSV, and staph. It has been a very stressful time for her and our family and we want so badly for her to build her strength back again and have a chance at a transplant.

Currently, she has been discharged to a rehab facility so she can continue to be monitored and regain strength for daily activities as she is very weak. Hopefully, she can graduate to another rehab that focuses on physical therapy next so she can speed up the process back to the transplant list.
