Gus’s Story

Site created on May 2, 2018

On April 30, 2018 Gus was in an accident. He was a few minutes late for baseball practice, having just gotten off the ice from hockey. He ran out from between two cars, and as he was crossing the street to join his team, he was stuck by a motor vehicle that had no chance of seeing him prior to impact.

On Friday, Gus participated in his school's annual drama performance. He had one line which he belted out proudly (and very quickly). It was so heartwarming to see him up on stage with all of his classmates. He has also been cleared to play baseball. Tonight, we are off to his first game since the accident.

While in the hospital, we went through a whole kaleidoscope of emotions. One of those was an acceptance of a new normal in our lives. Would Gus ever be able to walk again? Talk? Function on his own? The list of questions went on and on. In a way, we were preparing for the worst. If we were able to do nothing but see his little chest rise and fall with his breath, we would have been happy. It put into perspective the definition of normal.

And yet, we got a miracle. Gus is very nearly back to his former normal.
