Grant’s Story

Site created on September 4, 2023

Welcome to Grant's CaringBridge site. Grant was born in January 2008 with kidney failure resulting in limited kidney function. In August 2011, Grant had his first kidney transplant gifted by his Aunt Tanya, at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital (now U of MN Masonic Children's). Grant has done remarkably well since the kidney transplant, aside from intermittent illness and infections.  Since January 2022, we noticed various symptoms of worsening kidney function, resulting in the need for another kidney transplant. As the last 18 months have passed, we have had a shift in the timeline for another surgery. This year that timeline has shortened quite rapidly. As part of the process to find another living donor match, we have utilized the UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) to search for the best possible match. Along with the search for a kidney, Carolyn (Grant's mom) was a blood type match but was not the best match when looking at antibodies for rejection. She was actually a better match for someone in Pennsylvania through a "Paired exchange" program that pairs donors with recipients on behalf of a needing recipient. This process helps with placement on the UNOS list. Carolyn was able to complete her donation on August 2, 2023. At that time, Grant was also dealing with the side effects of the progressing kidney failure. Grant made a decision to provide support of the failing kidney by a process of Renal Dialysis. Grant started dialysis on August 7th, and with minimal side effects, has been doing very well. His energy has returned, and he feels much better. While we wait for an update on a kidney and a surgery date, we will share updates here. Thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes.
