Newest Update

Journal entry by Michael Carroll

It’s hard to believe a month has gone by since our last update although looking back at all the things that have occurred, it’s hard to believe it’s only been one month. As I type this, we are back in Seattle after going to Grant’s last doctor appointment before surgery this Friday the 29th. Yes, that’s over two weeks after his originally scheduled procedure date. Shortly after returning to Spokane last month, Grant developed some swelling and pain in his left arm that was diagnosed as a large blood clot from his neck into his arm. Due to the complications that could potentially arise during surgery if the clot broke free, they moved his surgery to October 4th. We were grateful the clot was discovered yet disappointed for Grant having to go through another three weeks without surgery. He was admitted to the hospital. This presented the necessity for another round of chemo - another set back we didn’t want Grant to go through. Additionally, his weight had dropped to 151lbs during this time and required the need for him to go on TPN or IV nutrition to stabilize his weight loss. As Grant consistently has done, he took all of this news with the best spirit possible and moved forward. During all of this, his amazing support system with the Mead School District had planned a parking lot send off for his original surgery date. Terra and I discussed it and although he wouldn’t be leaving that week, he would be soon - and he needed, our whole family needed a moral boost. When we showed up that day, it was overwhelming. At least 200 friends, family and community supporters showed up and cheered our guy on. It was amazing! There were lots of hugs, tears and words of support. The Mead Family is incredible and Grant has felt it from the day of his diagnosis. Thank you ❤️. Terra had a great idea to take some of his friends out for lunch afterwards so we were able to continue the fun for a few hours as we let the kids eat to their hearts content at Shari’s. It was a great time! After being admitted for his two-night stay for in-patient chemo, we received news they were moving his surgery to September 29th and they were canceling his chemo and sending him home!  Finally a medical win for Grant that we could celebrate!  His hair was staring to grow back and now he’s got quite the fuzzy beard and head! Now, 4 weeks later, Grant has gained an incredible 39lbs since being at his low! Thank you TPN! So he is only approximately 5lbs less than the day of diagnosis. Terra and I find comfort in thinking that God might have used the blood clot as a way to gain time for Grant to gain strength and weight to prepare him for his surgery. Now having a new date for surgery, we decided to plan a BBQ in Moses Lake for all of those who couldn't attend the school send off. We had well over 100+ friends and family attend last Sunday that travelled from North Idaho, Spokane, Omak, Sunnyside and other locations. It was a day of celebration that Grant was healthy to attend and had the stamina to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who came locally and from around the state! Our guy really felt the love and support! So as I sit here and type this I’m taking the moment to reflect on how much we have to be grateful for during the last three months. More than anything, it’s how Grant has been lifted up by our friends, family, medical team, ACCOIN and community. The next few days are going to be spent enjoying time as a family in Seattle before surgery. It’s hard to believe the day is finally here!  Friday, September 29th our guy is going to be on the road to recovery. It’s go time!  It’s tumor eviction time! Thank you from the Carroll 5 - more to come soon.
