Gordie’s Story

Hi all –

We are starting this site to post regular updates to decrease individual text messages and calls to my dad and mom as much as possible. We are so grateful for everyone's love, concern, support, prayers and well wishes during this difficult time. We're grateful for the outpouring of love and offers to help that you've all shown in recent weeks. Community, like family, is everything. My dad and our family have one of the best. We will update this page, so please continue to check back here and leave messages. We will share with my dad, too.

If you wish to send cards, photos, quotes and / or Bible verses to the hospital, my dad's address is:
Gordon Hopcian
8A UH Room 8410
1500 E. Medical Center Drive
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-5110

NO FLOWERS PLEASE. Only items that can be hung on the walls.

We are allowed to decorate his room and make it feel like home, as much as possible, so we'll add your notes of love to the walls.

At this time, we kindly ask for no visitors. My dad needs to rest as much as possible. As visitors are welcome, we'll share more guidelines and likely a schedule to make sure he isn't overwhelmed with visits. We'll likely do the same for phone calls as well. We just need to wrap our minds around what is happening here and how his days will look first.

Again, thank you for your love and support. More to come.

With much love,
Emily – on behalf of Gordie, Carol and Kathryn

Newest Update

Journal entry by Emily Hopcian

We had a meeting with Dad’s medical teams (BMT & ICU) and palliative care Friday afternoon. With multiple organs starting to fail and his issues with GVHD ongoing (underneath all he’s been through this last week alone), we made the incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision to move from continuing medical treatment to comfort care only. (We just wish Dad could’ve been part of that decision.) He remained sedated and intubated and was given medicine to help him remain comfortable and peaceful, which was our top priority.

His four siblings were able to visit and spend time with all of us Friday afternoon.

Over the past two days, we played his favorite music, watched some favorite movies (The Sound of Music, The Russian Five, My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and shared favorite memories. All with him. We showered him in love and kisses and held his hands.

Mom, Kathryn and I remained with him here at the hospital and were all holding his hands when he passed from this life to the next at 12:20 p.m. today (Sunday, May 9). The priest stopped in to pray with all four of us before noon. Dad seemed comfortable and peaceful through the end.

Our hearts are broken 💔 There are no words. Thank you, all, for your love for and support of my dad and our family always, but especially throughout these past two years. My dad was, and is, so loved. The best there ever was.
